The majority of student, 92%, qualify for free or reducted-cost lunch. Keonepoko is tucked within the \u02bb\u014dhi\u02bba trees of Puna district.\u00a0 Early Hawaiians identified many of Puna\u2019s treasures within mo\u02bbolelo and \u2018\u014dlelo no\u02bbeau.\u00a0 One example of this is the saying \u201cKa ua moaniani lehua o Puna\u201d; the rain that brings the fragrance of the lehua of Puna.\u00a0 Through these words, we understand the value of our surrounding forest and rains that perpetuate the diverse life cycles our forests support.\u00a0 It is also in these forests where the first hula is said to have been danced by Pele\u2019s sister, Poli\u02bbahu. The school\u2019s physical location also has significant historical value.\u00a0 A major battle once took place where H building and the library stands.\u00a0 Additionally, the school has named their mascot as N\u0101 Pueo \u201cThe Owls\u201d due to their abundance in the area. Returning to Keonepoko for her second year is Vice-principal, Darlette Driskell.\u00a0 In addition, Keonepoko Elementary School has two counselors, one librarian and on staff Student Activity Coordinators, Student Services Coordinators, Registrars, Athletic Directors, and Resource Teachers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Community<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Keonepoko Elementary School is one of two elementary schools located in the P\u0101hoa area of Puna.\u00a0 The school services five subdivisions within Puna; Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Shores, \u2018\u0100inaloa, Orchid land, and parts\u00a0of Hawaiian Paradise Park.<br \/>\nIn the 2014-15 school year, 85.9% of the student population received free\/reduced lunch. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the American Community Survey (ACS) 2006-2010, and the incorporation of Hawai\u02bbi&#8217;s HSC boundary areas the following graphic provided below displays data for the P\u0101hoa High School Complex (HSC).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0BywHRu3xALuJNTJjdWxaQUctRFE\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-88\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kysoller\/files\/2016\/02\/Student-Demographics_2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Student Demographics_2\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kysoller\/files\/2016\/02\/Student-Demographics_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kysoller\/files\/2016\/02\/Student-Demographics_2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kysoller\/files\/2016\/02\/Student-Demographics_2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0The number of students receiving this service has been steadily increasing since 2009. Therefore, the majority of the P\u0101hoa student population comes from impoverished families. Transiency and attendance are issues that challenge the school throughout the course of the school year. It is not uncommon to go into a class one day and be introduced to a new student and within a short time that two other students have left.\u00a0 People move into the community because of low land prices and the opportunity to live in an affordable home.\u00a0 Families also take in many other family members when times get tough and jobs are scarce.\u00a0 Leaving the community is often due to better job\/career choices or the need to move in with family members who live somewhere else.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Kealapono Contributions<\/h5>\n<p>Kealapono\u00a0has been partnering with Keonepoko Elementary School for several years.\u00a0 The mission of our division is \u201cto create opportunities for Native Hawaiian keiki and &#8216;ohana to foster the love of learning and enable them to build foundations that embody cultural identity and acedemic preparedness for continued growth.\u201d\u00a0 Our current regional focus on Hawai\u02bbi island is to improve the literacy skills of students in grades K-3, through the context of science. Achieving this goal is done by utilizing culturally relevant practices (mele, oli, mo\u02bbolelo), place based as well as culture-based learning to expand their understanding of the place in which they live.\u00a0 Our lessons are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the state science benchmarks\/standards, and the Literacy Thinking Skills, by Fountas and Pinnell.\u00a0 Although HCPS III is the standard haum\u0101na are tested in, we are in the process of aligning our science units to the Next Generation Science Standards.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Knowledge Gained<\/h5>\n<p>Based on the data collected, it is clear to me that there is a definite\u00a0need to better the \u00a0situation in the P\u0101hoa\/Puna district to ensure a better future for its current residence and our haum\u0101na who will become adults, community members and future leaders for that place they call home. Having a connection and sense of place will prepare our haum\u0101na to be successful in securing a better future for themselves, their &#8216;ohana, and community. With continued support for the kumu and administration these positive changes can and will be possible in P\u0101hoa\/Puna.
