Sample Context
These samples were taken from a summative writing assignment at the end of the third quarter. The students learned about energy and simple machines and were asked to create an information text to share with the school office staff about what they had learned about the topics learned in science. The students were given three days to complete this assignment.

Insight Gained
In comparing the two samples, one student had a very narrow and detailed writing while the other student seemed to get lost in the information that was being provided to the reader. The student with the detailed writing provided a lot of meaning and examples that supported the writer’s depth of knowledge which gave the reader a good understanding of was being shared and the knowledge the writer possessed about the content.

Next Steps
As a result of the assessment from the students’ samples, I am looking to create a more narrowed prompt that will keep the student focused to one content idea and provide specific examples to showcase their depth of knowledge. According to the data, there is an increase in the areas of voice and word choice and I think this is because of the specific nature of the RAFTS but it may have been difficult for some students to make explicit their thoughts on a topic, share what they learned and provide examples of what it is, does or works without crossing some of the other content areas into their writing. I would like to research or learn more about how to provide or craft better prompts that will give the student an opportunity to showcase their depth of knowledge about the topic to increase the meaning score and provide detailed and relevant examples.
