Overview<\/span><\/h2>\n

The U.S. Military consists of six service branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and Space Force. A brief summary of each branch is included below. You must have a high school diploma or GED to enlist in the armed services.<\/p>\n

Pathways<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are three main pathways to joining the military:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Enlisted:<\/strong> Haumana can express interest during high school and then a full-time<\/em><\/strong> commitment begins after graduating. Most jobs involve hands-on training in mechanical, transportation, human service, or office fields that transfer well to the civilian world.<\/li>\n
  2. Officer:<\/strong> In exchange for a paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career, haumana can express interest in a college with a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program or a Military Academy (usually highly competitive) and commit to serve full-time<\/strong><\/em> as officers in the Military after graduating with a four-year degree. Officers are the managers of the Military, acting in leadership roles that require planning, directing operations and making critical decisions. Officer positions have higher pay than enlisted members and also include careers that require advanced degrees, such as law and medicine.<\/li>\n
  3. Reserves or National Guard:<\/strong> A part-time<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0option for haumana to pursue (“one weekend a month \/ two weeks a year”) while working another job or going to college, the Reserves are available for active-duty deployment in times of war or national emergency while the National Guard focuses on homeland security and humanitarian relief.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Branches of the Military<\/span><\/h2>\n

    The Air Force provides a rapid and flexible air and space capability that can deliver forces anywhere in the world within hours.[\/one_sixth] [one_sixth]\"\"<\/p>\n

    The Army provides ground support and intelligence operations that protect and defend the United States.[\/one_sixth] [one_sixth]\"\"<\/p>\n

    The Coast Guard provides law and maritime safety enforcement, marine and environmental protection and military naval support.[\/one_sixth] [one_sixth]\"\"<\/p>\n

    A component of the Department of the Navy, the Marine Corps provides amphibious and ground units for combat operations.[\/one_sixth] [one_sixth]\"\"<\/p>\n

    On, above or below the water, the Navy is a major deterrent to aggression around the world.[\/one_sixth] [one_sixth_last]\"\"<\/p>\n

    The Space Force conducts global space operations and offer decision-makers military options to achieve national objectives.[\/one_sixth_last]<\/p>\n
