\u00a0What influences a culture? \u00a0How is culture shared\/spread\/perpetuated? \u00a0What does culture look like? \u00a0Where do you see culture around you?<\/p>\n<p>This project is inspired by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beforethey.com\">video\/TED-talk<\/a> given by photographer<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/11\/24\/americas_wrongheaded_obsession_with_vanishing_indigenous_peoples\/\"> Jimmy Nelson<\/a>, in which he shares his perspectives of photographing &#8220;authentic&#8221; and &#8220;dying&#8221; cultures.<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mPPxBpTP5hE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Think about how\u00a0his talk regarding isolation, change and authenticity of culture made you feel. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2013\/11\/24\/americas_wrongheaded_obsession_with_vanishing_indigenous_peoples\/\">What kinds of assumptions must he be making to think that these tribes are in danger of dying? <\/a>\u00a0If he came to Hawai&#8217;i, do you think Jimmy Nelson would see Hawaiians and feel the need to photograph us because we could be &#8220;dying&#8221;? \u00a0Or do you think he would view Hawaiians as no longer being &#8220;authentic&#8221;? \u00a0Think about how you relate to your culture, the &#8216;aina, your ancestors and family.<\/p>\n<p>Now watch this video of Wade Davis giving a talk on &#8220;Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XuJsbjKKh3E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Compare their world view &#8211; how do these two photographers interact with their subjects differently?\u00a0 How do their views on culture\/beauty\/authenticity impact their imagery?\u00a0 If you could invite one of these photographers to photograph your family\/culture, who would you choose?<\/p>\n<p>This project is about\u00a0using a modern tool like the camera to voice <em>your<\/em> reality and to depict the culture\/place we experience and participate in today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>demonstrate an understanding of photography (camera operations &amp; darkroom techniques)<\/li>\n<li>create\u00a0meaningful work that they are proud of<\/li>\n<li>express one\u02bbs relationship to culture through photography<\/li>\n<li>Analyze how one\u2019s understanding of the world is affected by experiencing visual imagery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WHAT TO TURN IN<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ONE (1) Contact Sheet (24 images = 1 full sheet)<\/li>\n<li>TWO (2) 8\u2033x10\u2033 prints (full sheets now, not half sheets)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Below are examples of a few photographers who use photography to create culturally expressive images:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.starbulletin.com\/2003\/12\/14\/features\/index.html\">Kapulani Landgraf<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Native Hawaiian artists and photography professor at Kapi\u02bbolani Community College, Landgraf uses photography as a tool to honor and preserve her connection to Hawaiian culture and land.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/fluxhawaii.com\/what-lies-beneath\/\">HERE\u02bbs<\/a> a great article on her work documenting the construction of the H-3.\u00a0 And <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiipublicradio.org\/post\/ponoiwi-living-bones-0\">HERE&#8217;s<\/a> an HPR segment on her work Pono&#8217;iwi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2014\/11\/2_BNG_Ikaika.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-302 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2014\/11\/2_BNG_Ikaika-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"2_BNG_Ikaika\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2014\/11\/2_BNG_Ikaika-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2014\/11\/2_BNG_Ikaika-624x476.jpg 624w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2014\/11\/2_BNG_Ikaika.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a02)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandonkhng.com\">Brandon Ng<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; &#8220;Utilizing a range of photographic approaches, Ng\u2019s work explores the\u00a0complexities of living in contemporary Hawai\u02bbi and how the past and the present socio-politico policies shape the future of the land and the people of Hawai\u02bbi. Through\u00a0photographic expression, Ng aims to provide his viewers with a forum for conversation,\u00a0while simultaneously exploring how the choices of an individual can impact a shared\u00a0place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>3) <a href=\"http:\/\/ulukau.org\/apo\/cgi-bin\/edgreevy?l=en\">Ed Greevy<\/a> &#8211; Ed Greevy is a photojournalist who has documented protests, rallies, and individuals revolving land rights movements in Hawai\u02bbi throughout the Hawaiian Renaissance up to the early 2000s.\u00a0 His body of work is controversial to some, though no one would argue how prolific and heartfelt the scope of his photographs are.<\/p>\n<p>4) <a href=\"http:\/\/lenscratch.com\/2016\/04\/will-wilson-the-states-project-new-mexico\/\">Will Wilson<\/a> &#8211; A contemporary Native American photographer, Wilson uses historical photographic processes when capturing portraits of contemporary Native Americans to reference the photographs made by Edward Curtis in 1900s of North American Indians. \u00a0Much of Curtis\u02bb work is considered to be iconic documentary photographs, yet he was motivated by the idea that people of these tribes are passing away. \u00a0Wilson makes modern photographs to combat this idea and show that Native Americans are still here 100 years later and aren\u02bbt going anywhere. \u00a0Here\u02bbs a great video on his work:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o5wG0kWp7iM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>4) <a href=\"http:\/\/lenscratch.com\/2015\/08\/robert-gallegos\/\">Robert Gallegos<\/a> &#8211; Gallegos&#8217; body of work &#8220;Autentico&#8221; explores his identity as a Mexican-American, struggling to find his place within a culture that is often portrayed in media through exaggerated stereotypes. \u00a0In his work, he photographs himself playing these rolls &#8211; the migrant, the gang member, the felon &#8211; as a way of questioning the authenticity of cultural stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>5) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/17th-century-art-racial-politics-maxine-helfman_55c13327e4b0d9b28f04b850?utm_hp_ref=arts&amp;kvcommref=mostpopular&amp;ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000027\">Maxine Helfman<\/a> &#8211; In her body of work, &#8220;Historical Correction&#8221; American photographer Maxine Helfman &#8220;recreates the poses of Flemish portraiture, replacing the faces of 17th-century elites with the faces of modern\u00a0men and women of color. Her posed photos keep the collars and hats, expressions and stares, but instead of a white-washed roster of subjects, her portraits place a spotlight on the black models she collaborates
