{"id":1368,"date":"2017-03-14T08:25:33","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T18:25:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/khsphotography\/?page_id=1368"},"modified":"2020-03-11T22:19:41","modified_gmt":"2020-03-12T08:19:41","slug":"photo-1-project-4-framing-balance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/photo-i\/photo-1-project-4-framing-balance\/","title":{"rendered":"Photo I &#8211; Project 4: Ko\u02bbu \u02bbOhana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>N\u0101n\u0101 i ke kumu.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Look to the source.\u00a0<\/em> Utilize various sources (i.e. kupuna, kumu, loea, mo\u02bbolelo, wahi pana, mo\u02bbomeheu) to foster inquiry and seek knowledge.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>OVERVIEW:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u02bbve spent a quarter learning about how to use a camera, work in the darkroom to process film and print pictures, gained a better understanding of visual and conceptual focus, and how different lighting can be used to help communicate meaning.\u00a0 Now in the second half of our course, we are going to build upon this foundation to become more literate with our visual communication by focusing on how perspective &amp; composition can be used to strengthen the images we create.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For this project, you will be taking family portraits while paying close attention to framing and balance in your composition.<\/strong>\u00a0 Think about how elements in your frame work to create motion, stabilizing your composition by using line, shape, space and visual weight to direct the viewer\u2019s eye throughout an image and gather information within the picture. \u00a0Also, pay attention to how your perspective of your subject matter influence\u02bbs the viewer\u02bbs perspective as well.<\/p>\n<p>Think about family members you love and how you could take a picture of them in a way that would communicate your love. \u00a0Consider people you don&#8217;t spend a lot of time with or someone you admire, like a kupuna.\u00a0 Think about what it is you want to communicate about this person and how lighting, focus, and composition can play a roll in capturing that message.\u00a0 The whole point of this assignment isn&#8217;t just to capture their face, but to spend time with this person, learn something about them, and create meaningful images.<\/p>\n<p>Since some of you may not have access to family members at all times, think about what &#8220;family&#8221; or &#8220;&#8216;ohana&#8221; means to you.\u00a0 Is family only blood-relatives?\u00a0 What connects a family?\u00a0 What type of family do you belong to or want to belong to?\u00a0 Think about what family does for you &#8211; people who care for you, feed you, teach you, correct you?\u00a0 Who else represents these things to you outside of your family?<\/p>\n<p><strong>To ground this project, find an \u02bb\u014dlelo no\u02bbeau that relates to how you are approaching the idea of \u02bbohana.<\/strong> \u00a0Obviously you can do a Google search, but let\u02bbs be honest, Google isn\u02bbt the best when it comes to \u02bbike Hawai\u02bbi. \u00a0Look through the actual \u02bb\u014clelo Hawai\u02bbi book by Mary Kawena Pukui for a better compilation (the HPC in Midkiff has several copies and I\u02bbll bring my copy to class when we come back from break).<\/p>\n<p>Be aware of all the things we&#8217;ve learned so far in photography, as your prints should demonstrate an understanding of camera operations, proper darkroom technique, an awareness of lighting and composition, as well as some kind of deeper meaning\/message. Build\u00a0an awareness of geometry and framing in your every day world and see how shapes and partitioning of your frame can communicate ideas.\u00a0 Look for frames within frames to direct the gaze of the viewer and think about where to place your model.\u00a0 Or divide your scene up, keeping in mind the different types of balance we learned about in class too!\u00a0 Scroll down to watch a short video on shape\/framing in composition and a review on dynamic, static, and symmetrical balance.<\/p>\n<p>The week we come back from Spring Break will be a work week, so take all your pictures and be ready to process your film on the Monday we return!<\/p>\n<p><strong>STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify Elements\/Principles related to composition in the world as well as other artwork<\/li>\n<li>demonstrate an understanding of photography (camera operations &amp; for interesting framing and composition<\/a>.\u00a0 Which photograph here has the most interesting object dividing the frame?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/striking-images-remind-us-of-the-importance-of-grandparents_us_564f738de4b0879a5b0af1ea\">Amy Luna<\/a> did a photography project on her grandparents to create and cherish her time with them.\u00a0 Notice how she doesn\u02bbt just focus on their face, but also includes their surroundings, activities, and relationship together.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2014\/10\/03\/magazine\/01-brown-sisters-forty-years.html\">Nicholas Nixon <\/a>has taken a picture of the same 4 sisters every year for the last 40 years.\u00a0 The passage of time helps illustrate the changes in fashion, location, as well as relationships between sisters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some of my photographs from a body of work &#8220;Ku\u02bbu Kupuna&#8221;
