{"id":1207,"date":"2016-09-07T15:20:01","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T01:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/khsphotography\/?page_id=1207"},"modified":"2020-01-31T16:06:32","modified_gmt":"2020-02-01T02:06:32","slug":"ind-study-project-2-advertisements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/independent-study\/photo-iii-project-guidelines\/ind-study-project-2-advertisements\/","title":{"rendered":"Ind Study: Project #2 &#8211; Advertisements"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>OVERVIEW:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This project is about exploring a different realm of professional photography.\u00a0 The first project was framed around an &#8220;artist\u02bbs&#8221; perspective, where the success of your images is\u00a0 based off of how well you communicated a sense-of-self.\u00a0 This project is less about you (the creator\/photographer) and more about an imaginary client.\u00a0 For a working or commercial photographers, their success is based off of how well their pictures communicate what their client wants.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re photographing your friend for their senior portraits, you generally want them to feel like their pictures make them look nice\/handsome\/adult-like while still looking like themselves.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re photographing a wedding, it goes beyond making the bride look beautiful &#8211; you need to capture all the right moments (walking down the aisle, the I-Do, the first kiss, etc) on top of making the couple and their venue look amazing.\u00a0 It matters less about how nice YOU think your pictures are, but more about how much the couple likes them.\u00a0 Not because they know better, but because they are paying you and you better deliver whatever they want for the agreed upon money.<\/p>\n<p>Being a commercial photographer can be a challenge because of this, but who cares, there&#8217;s no money on the line for this project, just grades!<\/p>\n<p>For this project, you will<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>choose a product\/item\/brand,<\/li>\n<li>think up a way to sell said product\/item\/brand. How do I make this thing desirable?\u00a0 Why should people want to buy this?\u00a0 Make up a slogan and think about how pictures could reference or communicate this slogan.<\/li>\n<li>figure out how to photograph something in such a way that makes people want to buy it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>WHAT\u02bbS DUE:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 contact sheets<\/li>\n<li>4 8&#8243;x10&#8243; prints\n<ul>\n<li>At least 1 print must be a product shot that is focused on what you\u02bbre trying to sell<\/li>\n<li>At least 1 print must be a lifestyle shot that shows this product\/brand in use or in &#8220;the real world&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Check out<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diyphotography.net\/5-thoughts-tips-consider-professional-product-photography\/\"> this link f<\/a>or 5 tips on shooting products for commercial photography.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INSPIRATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professional photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markdelong.com\/blog\/power-of-advertising-photography\">Mark DeLong<\/a> wrote the following about the value of Advertising Photography:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">What emotional response do you want your campaign to evoke? Not all marketers understand the importance of this concept. The right photo can make an audience feel the emotions of excitement, trust, romance, freedom or fear. An advertising photographer knows how to craft images to stir up the right emotions to achieve marketing goals. They help develop the brand\u2019s reputation and cultivate relationships with consumers. Few things can do this more effectively than the right imaging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Whether the company wants to be perceived as sleek and polished, approachable and friendly, or exciting and innovative, the advertising photographer can craft this company image with the right photos. This contribution gives new meaning to the phrase \u201cimage is everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Check out magazine advertisements or look books for different brands online.\u00a0 If you\u02bbre going to advertise a brand, research them a bit, look at their who their target audience is, and key words they use throughout their website<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patagonia.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/intangibles\/\">Patagonia\u02bbs blog <\/a>has great examples of images that promote sustainable, environmentally friendly, high quality outdoor clothes.\u00a0 Depending on the type of outdoor activity their advertising, their photographs change while still exhibiting a wide variety of compositions (detailed close-ups, portraits, and wide landscapes).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/live.hydroflask.com\/\">Hydro Flask&#8217;s<\/a> website and blog has a great blend of product shots (studio still lives) and life style advertisements with people using their product.\u00a0 Looking at the pictures on their site, how are they trying to sell this product?\u00a0 What kind of people use a Hydro Flask?\u00a0 Where do they use it?\u00a0 Why do they use it?<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetnwildhawaii.com\/\">Wet&#8217;n&#8217;Wild Waterpark<\/a> also has good examples of how photographs communicate a message about a company.\u00a0 Click through their website and make a list of types of pictures your seeing and what it could be saying about the park itself.\u00a0 A bunch of pictures of kids smiling = this is a family friendly place!\u00a0 Action shots of people splashing through a water slide = this place is Wet &amp; WILD. *insert thumbs up emoji*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PREVIOUS STUDENT WORK:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1618\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2018\/01\/Project3-PaytonM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1618\" class=\"wp-image-1618 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2018\/01\/Project3-PaytonM-1024x327.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2018\/01\/Project3-PaytonM-1024x327.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2018\/01\/Project3-PaytonM-300x96.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2018\/01\/Project3-PaytonM-768x245.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2018\/01\/Project3-PaytonM-500x159.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/khsphotography\/files\/2018\/01\/Project3-PaytonM.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Payton chose to shoot an advertisement for Hurley clothing and photographed his friends wearing Hurley while at the beach.
