FALL 2022 / SPRING 2023 KS Course Offerings
KS External Internship Course (KHO 8505): For highly motivated, self directed students who wish to “learn by doing,” with practical work experiences that build on and/or complement their classroom learning at KS Kapālama, to help prepare them for success in college, career, or life in general.

Course outcomes: Ability to introduce yourself via resumes & interviews about your gifts and aspirations for yourself and your community. Create a work/learning plan with a mentor and the internship coordinator to culminate in the delivery of original contributions to a real world business or community initiative within the semester.
Eligibility: Grade 11 or 12; approval of counselor & internship coordinator.
Course registration pre-requisite: interview with internship coordinator. (Priority will be given to those who complete course 8505 form and interview to secure placements, one semester ahead.)
Grading/Credit: Credit/Non-Credit for .5 elective credit per semester.
Schedule & Location: Any class period or outside of class periods; Ka’ahumanu Building Room 107 or remotely for students pre-registered for Distance Learning only.
KS Campus-Based Internship Course (KHO 8503): Gain valuable experience as an intern to assist a KHS kumu for a semester. For enthusiastic students who can take initiative in the classroom to support active learning by their peers. This may include assisting with instruction, tutoring, student activities, and other duties.
Course outcomes: Developed by Course Kumu
Eligibility: Grade 11 or 12; prior approval of course kumu & counselor.
Course registration pre-requisite: Student should first seek approval of course kumu, then complete course 8503 form to confirm that your counselor is informed, approves your plan, and finalizes your registration. (Priority will be given to students who consult their kumu and gain approval ahead of the semester, and most kumu will only agree to one course assistant intern per class period.)
Grading/Credit: Credit/Non-Credit for .5 elective credit per semester.
Schedule & Location: As determined by Course Kumu.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2023 Course #8407
Internships Course #8407: Intensive internship of 80-100 unpaid work hours with an external mentor or KS kumu or staff member. For highly motivated students prepared to introduce themselves to professional mentors and propose the delivery of a new product and/or set of services to help a business or organization excel.
Course outcomes: Developed via negotiations between each intern and mentor, with support from the internship coordinator.
Eligibility: Rising juniors or seniors (summer ahead of grade 11 or 12); prior approval of counselor and parent or guardian.
Course registration steps:
- Student should register for summer school course #8407.
- Student must complete course 8407 form to apply for course approval by the internship coordinator, who will schedule a 1:1 interview to brainstorm internship possibilities to pursue and secure ahead of summer.
- An individualized internship work and learning plan will be prepared, with details on the work contributions and expected learning by the intern, timeline and deadlines for all work, and supports to be available from a mentor and KS. The plan must be signed by the intern, mentor, a parent/guardian, and the internship coordinator for your summer school registration for Course #8407 to be confirmed, by May 19, 2023. If an internship placement is not secured ahead of summer, your course registration will be cancelled, and any and all fees for summer school previously paid for may be transferred to cover an alternative class or will be refunded.
Grading/Credit: Letter grades A-F; 1.0 elective credit equivalent to a full year course.
Schedule & Location: As agreed to in the internship work and learning plan.

KSK students of all high school grade levels may request other one-time or short-term career exploration supports such as:
- Help with brainstorming about possible inspiring mentors to search out and connect with for a talk story session via Zoom.
- Search out possible virtual or in-person site visits to off-campus locations to learn more about work you’re curious about.
- Find volunteer or internship opportunities available to HS students that you might apply for, to gain hands-on experience.
