The Chosen<\/a> <\/em>by Chaim Potok. <\/strong>A story of two Jewish boys of different sects who become friends despite external challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Tale of Two Cities <\/a><\/em>by Charles Dickens. <\/strong>The French Revolution backgrounds a great love, a great sacrifice, and of course, one of the most famous first sentences in English literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Westlake: Poems by Wayne Kaumuali\u02bbi Westlake <\/em><\/a>by Wayne Kaumuali\u02bbi Westlake.<\/strong> An explosion of poetry, art, and genius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Native Use of Fish in Hawaii <\/a><\/em>by Margaret Titcomb. <\/strong>For those who grew up in the school of the ocean, this is a great resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mulligan: A Parable of Second Chances <\/em><\/a>by Ken Blanchard and Wally Armstrong.<\/strong> A book about a golfer who learns life lesson by reflecting on how he plays the “game of life.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Companies We Keep: Amazing Stories about 450 of Hawaii’s Best Known Companies <\/a><\/em>by Bob Sigall (and his students).<\/strong> This is a very interesting read that activates knowledge about places and people you already know.  Note: Most of the companies are located on O’ahu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"SunSet-\"<\/a><\/figure>Mrs. Hikila kehikila@ksbe.edu,<\/a> 2023 Freshmen\/Sophomore Kumu of the Year

Beloved <\/a><\/em>by Toni Morrison.<\/strong> This novel is for the academic reader; it’s the story of an escaped slave and her “lost” child; incredibly beautiful language and opportunity for critical analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moloka’i <\/em><\/a>by Alan Brennert. <\/strong>This novel is a historical fiction about a girl who contracts Hansen’s disease and is forced to grow up on Kalaupapa; a very engaging storyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Help <\/a><\/em>by Kathryn Stockett. <\/strong>I love the author’s use of voice and her ability to take you through a myriad of emotions in this novel.  It’s the story of an African American maid set in the 1960’s in Jackson, Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wuthering Heights <\/a><\/em>by Emily Bronte. <\/strong>One of my favorite literary classics; it’s a story of love, hate, acceptance, rejection, and revenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Giver <\/a><\/em>by Lois Lowry. <\/strong>Set in an utopian community, the main character begins to question the only world he has ever known.

The Scarlet Letter <\/em><\/a>by Nathaniel Hawthorne. <\/strong>Hawthorn writes to cleanse his mo’ok\u016b’auhau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mililani Mauka <\/a><\/em>by Chris McKinney.<\/strong> A little weird, but a great story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Count of Monte Cristo <\/a><\/em>by Alexander Dumas.<\/strong> A story of a character seeking revenge after many torments are lain upon him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tattoo <\/a><\/em>by Chris McKinney. <\/strong>A local story that follows a character’s struggle with the syndicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blu’s Hanging <\/a><\/em>by Lois-Ann Yamanaka. <\/strong>For mature audiences – follows a family’s struggle with abuse and making ends meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tattoo <\/a><\/em>by Chris McKinney.<\/strong> “The other Hawaii, the one tourists never get to see.” – Ian MacMillan<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brave New World <\/a><\/em>by Aldous Huxley. <\/strong>A fantasy of the future (first published in 1932) that sheds a blazing critical light on the present. “The novel anticipates developments in reproductive technology, sleep learning, psychological manipulation, and classical condition that combine profoundly to change society.” – Harper Collins\/Wikipedia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wayfinding through the Storm <\/a><\/em>by Gavin Daws and N\u0101 Leo \u02bbO Kamehameha. <\/strong>The inside story behind the controversy surrounding the abuse of power that nearly destroyed Kamehameha Schools during the 1990’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scott Fitzgerald. <\/strong>For tragic Jay Gatsby and the novel’s prose: “[Gatsby] smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly.  It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life.  It faced –or seemed to face the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor.  It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.” – The Great Gatsby<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Harry Potter Series <\/em><\/a>by J.K. Rowling.<\/strong> The books inspired a theme park. Harry: “So light a fire!” Hermione: “Yes… of course… but there’s no wood!” Ron: “HAVE YOU GONE MAD?!  ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday Night at the Pahala Theater <\/a><\/em>by Lois-Ann Yamanaka. <\/strong>This book of poetry made me realize the potential of poetry,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian <\/a><\/em>by Sherman Alexie.<\/strong> It has cartoons! “I grabbed my book and opened it up.  I wanted to smell it.  Heck, I wanted to kiss it.  Yes, kiss it.  That’s right, I am a book kisser. Maybe that’s the kind of perverted or maybe its just romantic and highly intelligent.” – The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

T.S. Elliot’s poem, “The Love Son of J. Alfred Prufrock.”<\/a><\/strong> Because we’ve all felt like “a pair of ragged claws scuttling across the floor of silent seas” and the answer to, “Do I dare disturb the universe?” is no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Elegance of the Hedgehog <\/em><\/a>by Muriel Barbery.<\/strong> Translation from French.  Beautifully written and very thought provoking, though complex with intense French and Russian literary references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teacher Man <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by Frank McCourt.<\/strong> Wonderful story and memoir about McCourt’s experiences as a teacher.  Not necessarily examples of great teaching, but definitely great storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woman Hollering Creek <\/a><\/em>by Sandra Cisneros. <\/strong>Series of imagery-laden short stories dealing with issues of racial and gender identity for mature audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grendal<\/a><\/em> by John Gardner.<\/strong> Amazing retelling of a canonical story (Beowolf) through an alternate perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moloka’i <\/em><\/a>by Alan Brennert. <\/strong>Historical fiction about the experiences of a girl with Hansen’s disease growing up in Kalaupapa.  The narrative really makes the history come alive and connects well with topics covered in Kaluaiko’olau.  Some sections for mature audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Catch-22 <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by Joseph Heller.<\/strong> Absurdist, satirical, black humor.  Takes a critical look at society and the human condition.  Even though the book is set in World War II, Yossarian lives even today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blu’s Hanging <\/a><\/em>by Lois-Ann Yamanaka.<\/strong> An unflinching look at growing up poor in Hawai\u02bbi, with all the struggles, dysfunction, and sense of community that goes along with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corelli’s Mandolin <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by Louis de Bernieres.<\/strong> A love story, but not a cheesy one.  Explores different types of love and has a very ambiguous take on the atrocities committed in the book. The movie sucked. The book is pretty awesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jennifer Government <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by Max Barry.<\/strong> I actually read this book in a grad school class.  I thought it was going to be terrible but its super fun to read and entertaining.  It’s clever, has a lot of action, and touches on issues of globalization and economic inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clifford the Big Red Dog <\/a><\/em>by Norman Bridwell. <\/strong>A gripping tale of Clifford, a gigantic red dog, as he goes through his life journey seeking acceptance and finding his place in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by Seth Grahame-Smith. <\/strong>Jane Austen’s classic tale re-envisioned with a zombie apocalypse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Death Troopers <\/a>by Joe Schreiber. <\/strong><\/em>Star Wars Legend Hans Solo and Chewbacca battle a zombie apocalypse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William Shakespeare’s Star War <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by Ian Doescher. <\/strong>Two of my all-time favorites together.  What could be better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storm Front <\/a><\/strong><\/em>by Jim Butcher. <\/strong>The first book in the Harry Dresden Files. Wizard and Detective in one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
