Through the sharing of musical experiences, each child forms a foundation that will help to develop relationships and tools that positively contribute to society.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-104 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kesk2specials\/files\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-01-at-5.10.24-PM-288x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kesk2specials\/files\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-01-at-5.10.24-PM-288x300.png 288w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kesk2specials\/files\/2019\/10\/Screen-Shot-2019-10-01-at-5.10.24-PM.png 635w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Students, Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, have music class twice in a six-day cycle for 30 minutes. They experience and learn about music, along with its elements, through various activities:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Singing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Playing of instruments<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Music notation reading<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Listening<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Movement<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The musical components that are covered throughout the year are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Rhythm:\u00a0 beginning with the discovery of pulse that lies within all music, students advance to the reading and playing of rhythm patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Pitch:\u00a0 pitch matching involves training the ear to hear various musical pitches and matching them with the voice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Movement:\u00a0 body movement is incorporated into the music lesson. Students begin with songs accompanied by sign language, progress to the use of larger body movements and then advance to involve the entire body in choreography.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Listening:\u00a0 students listen to and evaluate musical pieces composed in various styles and discuss the elements involved such as mood (happy vs. sad), tempo (speed of song), dynamics (loud\/soft), identification of instruments, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Music Terminology:\u00a0 students learn musical vocabulary and their meanings such as pitch, high\/low, ascending\/descending, scale, melody, instrument names.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Instruments:\u00a0 students have opportunities to play instruments from the percussion family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Repertoire:\u00a0 beginning in Kindergarten, students learn songs, both in English and Hawaiian, which are standard Kamehameha Elementary repertoire. Depending on the grade level, songs reflecting the Social Studies curriculum are learned: self, family, Americana. Chapel, holiday and special occasion songs are also taught to the students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Performance:\u00a0 students perform at various times throughout the year.
