{"id":2231,"date":"2018-09-19T09:00:58","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T19:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/keshmc46\/?p=2231"},"modified":"2018-09-19T09:42:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T19:42:00","slug":"back-to-school-at-the-hmc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/keshmc46\/2018\/09\/19\/back-to-school-at-the-hmc\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to School at the HMC!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We are now into our second month of school and boy is time flying!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here, in the HMC, our upper grade students have gone through their library orientation scavenger hunt, been learning how to be safe and effective digital citizens and getting excited about reading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/keshmc46\/files\/2018\/09\/Bib-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/keshmc46\/files\/2018\/09\/Bib-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a>In December 2017, we introduced an online social networking site called Biblionasium to our 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a safe and restricted site that operates via our Destiny Online Catalog.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It allows our KES students to log reading time, create reading goals, write book reviews and share recommendations with their classmates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Students can also participate in contests and earn badges for reading, which is something they totally love doing! Consider it the GoodReads for kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/keshmc46\/files\/2018\/09\/Bib-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2238 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/keshmc46\/files\/2018\/09\/Bib-1-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/keshmc46\/files\/2018\/09\/Bib-1-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/keshmc46\/files\/2018\/09\/Bib-1.jpg 695w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This year we have started using Biblionasium early!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All of our 4th and 5th graders have been trained and are now using this resource weekly &#8211; logging, reading and recommending books. A new feature we are trying out this year is the reading challenges! Yes, being that most of our students are highly competitive by nature, they can now challenge each other to read a wider range and quantity of books! I, too, have joined in on the challenge.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I created a challenging reading goal for myself:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Read 200 books by the end of the school year and challenged the students, collectively as a class and individually, to beat me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Classes that do, will receive a special reward.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Individual students who do will get their own special prize. So, now, the challenge is on and I am looking forward to getting my socks knocked off!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to our regular classes, this year many of the specialist teachers in grades 4 and 6 are teaching elective courses as part of our La No\u02bbono\u02bbo rotational days.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the HMC, my 6th grade course is the KES Yearbook.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, this year our yearbook will be student created!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Currently, 21 students are enrolled and learning all things Yearbook.
