{"id":22,"date":"2011-10-11T11:30:09","date_gmt":"2011-10-11T21:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/kawengle\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2018-08-09T12:39:28","modified_gmt":"2018-08-09T22:39:28","slug":"syllabus-level-1b","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kawengle\/syllabus-level-1b\/","title":{"rendered":"Syllabus Papa \u02bb\u014clelo Hawai\u02bbi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hawaiian Language Level 1B<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hale: Kekelakekeuokalani<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lumi: 1104<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ph: (808) 982-0481<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>e-mail: <a href=\"mailto:kawengle@ksbe.edu\">kawengle@ksbe.edu<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Aloha mai k\u00e4kou and welcome to 8<sup>th<\/sup>grade Hawaiian Language where students continue to develop and improve their language skills through the 21<sup>st<\/sup>century skills.\u00a0 Students initiate and engage in meaningful conversations and write short compositions on various topics using greater complexity in language expression.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Course Goals\/Objectives:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The major goal in Hawaiian Language is to inspire a passion to \u02bb\u014dlelo in order to empower our l\u0101hui.\u00a0 Students will be using \u02bb\u014dlelo Hawai\u02bbi as the vehicle for learning various concepts and skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong><strong><em><u>Areas of Study<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Language topics\/themes that will be covered during the year include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>N\u0101 Hua\u2018\u014dlelo Hou (New Vocabulary)<\/li>\n<li>N\u0101 \u2018\u014clelo No\u2018eau (Wise and Poetical Sayings)<\/li>\n<li>N\u0101 \u2018\u014clelo P\u014dkole (Short Phrases\/Sentences)<\/li>\n<li>N\u0101 Pilina\u2018\u014dlelo (Sentence Structure)<\/li>\n<li>Ka Ha\u02bbi\u2018\u014dlelo (Informal and Formal Speech and Oratory)<\/li>\n<li>N\u0101 Mele\/Oli\/Pule (Song, Chant and Prayer)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em><u>Learning Standards and Expectations:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The eight grade students will participate and engage in communicative activities that are culturally healthy and appropriate.\u00a0 Majority of activities and lessons will be conducted in \u02bb\u014dlelo Hawai\u02bbi to promote communication and understanding in the target language.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Grading Policies (weighted grading):<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Graded will be done according to the Kula Waena Grading Policy (See Student Handbook and\/or parent letters for modifications \/ clarification):<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"334\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Formative Assessments: classwork, homework, short quizzes, small project, etc.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"63\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>20%<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"334\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Summative Assessments: Final projects, Unit tests<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"63\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>80%<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Final grades are determined by the cumulative assessment of student work, student performance and student mastery of the target language at the first year level. Students are still required to turn in all assignments even though the enrichment assignments do not raise or lower the students\u2019 grade in anyway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Attendance and Make-up Work<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is the responsibility of each individual student to check with the Kumu about any missing assignments.\u00a0All missing or incomplete assignments will be given a 0 if not completed and turned in according to the KS Connect upload schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><u>Classroom Discipline Rules\/Guidelines:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students are required to abide by the school-wide rules of conduct and appearance.\u00a0 Any student violating those set rules will be reprimanded as stated in the student and parent handbook.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students are expected to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participate in class activities, including daily chanting, discussions, individual and group assignments;<\/li>\n<li>Show respect to their peers and their Kumu;<\/li>\n<li>Use Hawaiian vocabulary and phrases learned in class;
