The names of the trees characterize different forms of light that are embodied in a flash of lightening (kauila), flickering flame (kukui), glowing reflection of the sun or moon (lama), and the lasting light of knowledge (olopua).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kaulualoha\/files\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-05-at-3.01.45-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-53 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/kaulualoha\/files\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-05-at-3.01.45-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-03-05 at 3.01.45 PM\" width=\"106\" height=\"124\" \/><\/a>P\u016b\u02bbulu Kauila<\/span><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span>The kauila represents the light of excellence. Capable minds and skillful hands yield excellent works. From the skillful hands of a carver, ihe (spear), p\u0101hoa (dagger), hohoa (kapa beater), \u014d\u02bb\u014d (farming\/digging stick), \u02bbauamo (carrying stick), and kua kuhu (anvil) were shaped. The Hawaiian value associated with kauila is po\u02bbo kela (excellence). Confidence stems from wisdom. The Hawaiian value associated with the kukui is na\u02bbauao (wisdom). The translation of Kap\u0101lama is \u201cthe enclosure made of lama.\u201d Within this enclosure we learn to care for others and ourselves. Boundaries and guidelines help to keep us safe and on task in our learning environment. The Hawaiian value associated with the lama is m\u0101lama (to care for one another, preserve, and protect). Olopua is a hard and durable wood that is dense and heavy. It is also used as a firewood and presents a hot flame even when green. The Hawaiian value associated with the olopua is \u02bbike pono (enduring understanding).
