Ito and the 5B FISH! Swim Strong Together!<\/p><\/div>\n

2018 starts off with a bang! \u00a0We continue in our quest to \u02bbimi \u02bbike-seek knowledge. \u00a0How do we make our learning real, deep? \u00a0How do we “get it”? \u00a0The haum\u0101na & I \u02bbswim strong” in our quest to gain a deeper understanding of our essential question: What is Our Kuleana? \u00a0Today, we were humbled & honored to ho\u02bbokipa Mr. Daniel Ikaika Ito, a \u02bb99 KS-Kap\u0101lama alum who grew up in Pap\u0101\u02bbikou, into our classroom to share his mana\u02bbo on his kuleana.<\/p>\n

From attending college in San Diego & UH M\u0101noa focused on journalism, to working in a restaurant back in O\u02bbahu, to writing for a surf magazine, to accomplishing his goal of being a writer & editor of Contrast magazine, many lessons were learned along the way. \u00a0Here he captures important points for us:<\/p>\n

1) Always Reach Out<\/u><\/b>: \u00a0Take risks and meet people. \u00a0Seek out people and information, even if it may be a different perspective from your own. \u00a0Makawalu-look at multiple perspectives to tell all sides of the mo\u02bbolelo to share & better understand other cultures.<\/p>\n

2) \u00a0Be Prepared<\/b><\/u>: Be professional-how you present yourself is important. \u00a0How you dress, how you carry yourself, & how you speak matters.<\/p>\n

3) \u00a0Strive for YOUR Personal Best<\/b><\/u>: \u00a0Not everytime will you succeed, but how you respond when you fail is what defines you. \u00a0Embrace pressures of deadlines and due dates instead of giving up! \u00a0Have a growth mindset! \u00a0Give it your all in all that you do.<\/p>\n

4) Set Goals for Yourself<\/u><\/b>: Work hard & have a good work ethic. \u00a0Work towards & keep your eye on your goals then set new ones for yourself.<\/p>\n

5) Seek out Inspirations<\/u><\/b>: Inspiration is everywhere you go, choose to see it. \u00a0Explore to find your passion, follow it, and learn from it!<\/p>\n

6) \u00a0Always Share Aloha<\/u><\/b>: \u00a0Greet people with kindness. \u00a0Find your aloha than offer it to others. \u00a0Leaders look to fulfill the needs of others by listening and asking questions to create one vision, ONE TEAM! \u00a0#OTOD!<\/p>\n

Ito\u02bbs journey of following his passions…beginning with loving surfing & reading someones every word in surf magazines at Iolani dorm at KSK has brought him full circle, he is now a surf coach at KSK, as he states that giving back to Ke Ali\u02bbi Pauahi and Kamehameha is important to \u00a0him. \u00a0He now shares Hawaiian perspective as a writer\/editor and has other young minds reading his every word. \u00a0He accomplished his goal of being an editor of a magazine by hana kupono and ho\u02bbomau…now, new goals are being formulated.<\/p>\n

Now that Ito has a family, his kuleana deepens…he left us with a closing thought of HIS kuleana…”To make Hawai\u02bbi a better place for the next generation (his baby son included)…For all keiki to have a better life filled with ALOHA!” \u00a0His parting advice, “Be a pono ambassador & respectable leader of our Hawaiian culture by modeling it and being able to articulate it to others who are not of the same culture!” \u00a0 In short, REPRESENT!<\/p>\n

Mahalo Ito for contributing to our future, for sharing your mo\u02bbolelo on your kuleana that k\u014dkua us to understand our kuleana, and most importantly, for reaching out to our world with aloha while your toes are firmly grounded in the culture of the islands!
