{"id":414,"date":"2018-03-08T14:40:51","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T00:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/hpkkw\/?page_id=414"},"modified":"2019-11-14T12:31:09","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T22:31:09","slug":"technology-guildelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/hpkkw\/technology-guildelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTABLE USE<\/strong><br \/>\nElectronic Communication with Students, Parents and Guardians<\/p>\n<p>In order to promote KS\u2019 goal of increasing sustainability through reduction in paperwork, KS will<br \/>\ncommunicate with students, parents and guardians electronically using one or more of the<br \/>\nfollowing approved electronic tools via the KS Systems and Web-based Applications (collectively<br \/>\n\u201cKS System\u201d):<br \/>\n\u2022<strong> Daily Bulletin:<\/strong> The middle school daily bulletin is posted on our website and can be found at<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/education\/hawaii\/middle_school\/\">http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/education\/hawaii\/middle\/<\/a>. Students are expected to check the bulletin daily and delete the bulletins from their email accounts weekly.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Teacher\u2019s email:<\/strong> Teacher\u2019s email addresses can be found on the Middle School\u2019s Web site at<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/education\/hawaii\/middle_school\/\">http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/education\/hawaii\/middle\/<\/a>. Click on the individual teacher\u02bbs blog for contact information.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>KS Connect:<\/strong> KS Connect (<a href=\"http:\/\/connect.ksbe.edu\/\">http:\/\/connect.ksbe.edu\/<\/a>) is a web-based system used to monitor<br \/>\nstudent grades, track student progress, register for the upcoming school year, view school<br \/>\nannouncements, access school information and facilitate communication between students,<br \/>\nteachers and parents. Once students are issued email accounts they will be given access to<br \/>\nKS Connect. Parents will receive information when their child enters Kamehameha Schools<br \/>\nHawai\u02bbi Middle School either during orientation or in the mail.<br \/>\n\u2022 <strong>Kamehameha Schools Hawai\u02bbi Kula Waena Website:<\/strong> The school\u2019s web site can be found at:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/education\/hawaii\/middle\/\">http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/education\/hawaii\/middle\/<\/a>. The site features a wellspring of useful information including the student and parent handbook, summer mailout information, links to other resources, and faculty blogs.<br \/>\nWe ask that those parents\/legal guardians who do not have access to the electronic tools listed<br \/>\nabove to contact their child(ren)\u2019s grade level unit office so that the same information may be sent\u00a0to them via U.S. mail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>USE OF KS MOBILE DEVICES AND THE KS SYSTEM<\/strong><br \/>\nKS assigns students at selected grade levels appropriate mobile devices (such as a laptop<br \/>\ncomputer or an iPad) and allows students the use of its internet, intranet and email systems to<br \/>\nsupport education-related communication and research. Students may access the systems<br \/>\nthrough the KS Network. The use of these KS owned mobile devices, the KS System and its<br \/>\nsupport facilities is a privilege and not a right, and students must abide by the guidelines<br \/>\ndiscussed below when using their issued devices on the KS System. Mobile devices are returned<br \/>\nat the end of the school year, unless KS has approved summer time use of the device. Upon<br \/>\nreturn, KS re-images its mobile devices for the new school year. KS will remove all non-approved\u00a0apps, software and content (including music, photos, videos, etc.) from each device.<br \/>\nInappropriate care and use will result in disciplinary action, as set forth in the disciplinary section\u00a0of this Handbook. You may view a detailed version of the guidelines online at<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/connect.ksbe.edu\">http:\/\/connect.ksbe.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>GUIDELINES FOR THE PROPER USE OF KS MOBILE DEVICES<\/strong><br \/>\nKS expects students to practice good digital citizenship that includes assuming personal<br \/>\nresponsibility for their assigned device. Each student has the kuleana or responsibility for caring<br \/>\nfor their device as if it were their own. Students are responsible for knowing the whereabouts oftheir device at all times. Devices that are left unattended will be taken to the Vice Principal\u2019s<br \/>\noffice and a search conducted to determine its user identity. When using KS mobile devices,<br \/>\nplease remember to observe the following practices:<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf The mobile devices are the legal property of Kamehameha Schools. Student\u2019s right of<br \/>\npossession and use is limited to and conditional upon his\/her full and complete<br \/>\ncompliance with the Student Technology Acceptable Use Agreement.<br \/>\n\u25cf Use of KS devices and systems for personal use should be kept to a minimum. Students<br \/>\nshould ask a teacher or computer lab resource person if they have questions or concerns<br \/>\nabout use of their assigned device.<br \/>\n\u25cf Report any mechanical problems with your assigned device or software to a teacher or<br \/>\ncomputer lab resource person and they will work to resolve the problem.<br \/>\n\u25cf Take steps to backup school work data according to instructions set out by KS teachers.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students may not purchase online music, apps or software with their mobile devices<br \/>\nwithout prior approval to do so by their teacher.<br \/>\n\u25cf Only assigned school software may be used on KS devices.<br \/>\n\u25cf Use of KS devices for entertainment purposes such as playing interactive games or<br \/>\nwatching YouTube, TV shows or DVD movies is not permitted.<br \/>\n\u25cf Conducting unauthorized commercial activity of any kind is prohibited.<br \/>\n\u25cf Do not connect unauthorized equipment to any KS system or alter KS equipment to<br \/>\nperform unauthorized activities.<br \/>\n\u25cf Removing software that has been installed by KS is prohibited.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students are permitted to use a variety of approved web tools on their devices for<br \/>\neducational purposes under teacher supervision. To view a list of these approved web<br \/>\ntools visit: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/hpkkw\/\">http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/hpkkw\/<\/a><br \/>\n\u25cf If a new tool is added to this list, your child\u2019s teacher will notify you via a letter.<br \/>\n\u25cf Store KS devices with care by using a proper case or tote bag to protect the device.<br \/>\n\u25cf Keep equipment surfaces clean by keeping them free of markings, ink or decorative<br \/>\nstickers.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students must have their name on power supply cords, removable cards and carrying<br \/>\nbags.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students must keep food and liquids away from their device.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students must protect their devices and peripheral equipment from theft or loss.<br \/>\n\u25cf Maintain all identifier markings or stickers placed on the devices by KS support staff.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students are not allowed to have others use their device.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students should ensure that their device is fully charged every day.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students will sign a Student Mobile Device Agreement that sets forth requirements<br \/>\ninvolved with the program including specific equipment care and maintenance.<br \/>\n\u25cf If a device is damaged or is in need of repair, KS may elect to replace the device and<br \/>\nprovide the student with a loaner. However, the use of a loaner device is not<br \/>\nguaranteed.<br \/>\n\u25cf Parents assume all financial responsibility for any device or loaner in their child\u2019s<br \/>\npossession that is damaged as a result of abuse, neglect, loss or theft. Families are<br \/>\nrequired to repair or replace the device or loaner at its current value, including<br \/>\nwarranties and other related accessories.<br \/>\n\u25cf When making print copies from a KS device, students are required to:<br \/>\no Follow all printing instructions.<br \/>\no Print all assignments in black and white, unless given teacher approval to print in<br \/>\ncolor.<br \/>\n\u25cf KS does not provide technical support for printing at home.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students should not clear their internet browser history on their device.<br \/>\n\u25cf Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds may only be used with teacher permission.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students who bring their own personal electronic mobile devices to school shall<br \/>\nassume all risk and liability for devices that are damaged, lost, or stolen.<br \/>\no If a student\u2019s use of these items interferes with the learning environment, the item<br \/>\nwill be confiscated and returned to parents at the unit office.<br \/>\no Chronic misuse of cell phones and mobile devices during school hours may lead<br \/>\nto disciplinary consequences as set forth in this Handbook.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GUIDELINES FOR THE PROPER USE OF THE KS SYSTEM<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen using the KS System you must observe the following practices:<br \/>\n\u25cf Properly manage your assigned KS student account within the KS system<br \/>\n\u25cf Students and parents are assigned a KS email account to receive and send official<br \/>\ncommunication through the KS Network.<br \/>\n\u25cf New students will be issued accounts within the first month of school. Returning students<br \/>\nwill continue to use KS accounts already established.<br \/>\n\u25cf Limit the use of the KS system for educational purposes only.<br \/>\n\u25cf Do not use any school email account for non-school related activities.<br \/>\n\u25cf Always protect the privacy of your account by using only your assigned User ID and<br \/>\nkeeping passwords private and confidential.<br \/>\n\u25cf Never give others your email account information or use or attempt to obtain user names<br \/>\nand passwords of other individuals under any circumstances.<br \/>\n\u25cf Actively organize and manage your account by checking KS email accounts daily,<br \/>\nrespond in a timely manner and regularly delete old emails.<br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>Do not use KS devices and\/or email accounts to register and\/or access social networks<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and abide by federal laws of sites that restricts use to<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>individuals ages 13 years and older.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>Do not use images relating to weapons, pornographic material, inappropriate language,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> alcohol, drugs, gang-related symbols, sounds or pictures as part of your student account.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>Do not use inappropriate media as wallpaper on their devices.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf Parents should check their email accounts at least every three days. Parents without email<br \/>\naddresses will receive like information via the U.S. Postal Service.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students are able to access their email from home via<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outlook.com\/imua.ksbe.edu\">http:\/\/www.outlook.com\/imua.ksbe.edu<\/a>.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students are responsible for saving, organizing and manipulating their files according to<br \/>\nteacher instructions.<br \/>\n\u25cf<strong> KS reserves the right to conduct random periodic inspections to enforce the 1:1<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> expectations and guidelines as explained in this Handbook.<\/strong><br \/>\nBe Civil and Courteous When Communicating via the KS System<br \/>\n\u25cf<strong> Use appropriate language in all system communications and content creation. Do not use<\/strong><strong>any KS system to transmit or receive obscene, threatening, offensive, sexually explicit,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>defamatory or harassing materials\/communications, or other language that denigrates any<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>individual or group, as well as do anything that is illegal or unethical.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf Do not \u201cborrow\u201d online material from other students or Web sites and try to pass them off<br \/>\nas your own. This is plagiarism, and it will not be tolerated within KS.<br \/>\n\u25cf Students should not receive promotional email, subscribe to automatic listservs, or send<br \/>\nchain letters.<br \/>\n\u25cf Never give out personal information online \u2013 including full name, telephone number,<br \/>\naddress and social security number.<br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>Steer clear of Internet sites that promote gambling, illegal drugs, alcohol consumption,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> violence or socially harmful activities.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>Do not visit chat rooms or other sites where people may misrepresent themselves and try<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>to gain your confidence in order to do harm.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf Under no circumstances should you meet with someone you chatted with online without<br \/>\nfirst notifying your parents, counselors or teachers.<br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>Do not share photos, lifestyle and other personal information on social media sites.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>KS devices may not be used to update personal Web spaces unless it is done in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> connection with KS educational activities.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf Do not respond to email messages from unknown senders unless the subject of the email<br \/>\nis related to KS educational activities.<br \/>\n\u25cf Do not participate in chain mail or other group mail activities where email addresses may<br \/>\nbe passed on beyond your knowledge.<br \/>\n\u25cf Learn more about Web and email etiquette safety from your teacher and KS program<br \/>\npersonnel.<br \/>\n\u25cf Use the KS System in a Manner that Does Not Harm the KS Network<br \/>\n\u25cf<strong> Do not alter KS system configurations used to provide KS firewall protections that protect<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>users against viruses, malware and spyware threats.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf Be considerate when using shared computer resources. Do not keep informational<br \/>\nresources from others, impair access to systems for others or maliciously alter or delete<br \/>\nshared information.<br \/>\n\u25cf Respect online material created by others. Do not copy or distribute that material if it<br \/>\nappears to be copyrighted and never use the materials directly without properly citing<br \/>\nsources. If you have questions about copyrights or the proper citing of sources, ask a<br \/>\nteacher.<br \/>\n\u25cf<strong> Do not use the KS system to harm others, alter other people\u2019s materials, or misrepresent<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>your identity.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Obey Copyright and Trademark Laws<\/strong><br \/>\n\u25cf Students are expected to follow all KS copyright policies and procedures. For a complete<br \/>\ncopy of these policies and procedures, please contact any KS staff.<br \/>\n\u25cf Do not transmit, transfer, upload or post content that is protected by U.S. copyright or<br \/>\ntrademark law onto a KS device or the KS system without written permission of the<br \/>\ncopyright\/trademark owner and KS.<br \/>\n\u25cf Remember to properly cite and credit all research and information obtained from the<br \/>\ninternet.<br \/>\n\u25cf Do not make unauthorized and\/or inappropriate copies of text, photos, audio files or<br \/>\nvideos found on KS devices or the KS system.<br \/>\n\u25cf <strong>Do not copy or download licensed software programs to your device, or give or sell<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> copies of software to others without written permission of the copyright owner unless the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>original software is clearly identified as shareware or in the public domain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DISCLAIMER OF CONTENT TRANSMITTED OVER THE KS NETWORK<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u25cf No confidentiality or privacy in Content<br \/>\n\u25cf All KS systems, including its email system, may be monitored by authorized school<br \/>\nofficials from time to time for educational purposes, and therefore there is no guarantee<br \/>\nthat the content provided over the system is in anyway deemed private or confidential.<br \/>\nSystem users may not claim copyright ownership rights over this content.<br \/>\n\u25cf No Warranty of Service or Accuracy\/Integrity of Content of the KS System<br \/>\n\u25cf KS makes no warranty for the service that it is providing.<br \/>\n\u25cf KS is not responsible for the accuracy or integrity of content that system users obtain via<br \/>\nthe KS System, especially if the information comes from open Internet sites or is provided<br \/>\nby individuals not formally representing KS positions.
