Today we will be looking at the grade level powerpoints in order to notice staircasing, strengths, possible needs, and celebrations. You will have a booklet and the powerpoints in order to complete our review in your small group.
We saw and heard wonderful things in Chicago. Teachers are doing fantastic work across our country, in Chicago, and at home. We had the opportunity to peek into the classes of teachers and learn about schools, professional development, and content area learning. Here are some of the big ideas that we noticed over the last few days.
Text immersion is key. Students need to be flooded with text in order to learn from it and about it. Texts can be used to mentor craft and spark curiosity. Immersion is crucial for reading, writing, learning, and thinking.
Time to talk is essential. Students (and teachers) need to have the time to talk in order to think, process new information, reflect, and participate in collaborative dialogue.
Inquiry drives students to learn. Learning jumps when students are encouraged to think and ask questions. Conceptual learning helps students to understand connections across the curriculum.
We also were affirmed in our work. Our focus on developing informational reading and writing is on track and important. Connecting to WEO develops understanding of concepts. Allowing students to make choices throughout the school day helps them to grow in motivation and in the understanding that their thinking matters.
We got to visit two schools today. Both are charter schools with a vision for student wellness.
namaste CHARTER SCHOOL was designed to promote health and wellness, both inside and out. The school day starts with morning movement, and movement continues throughout the day. All children have one hour of PE a day, which includes PE (as we know it), walking around the neighborhood, and using fitness machines. (One HOUR!!) Snacks are healthy and lunch includes organically grown produce with vegetarian options. The commitment to health was evident, as was the commitment to best literacy practices- in two languages. Some students participate in a dual language program, learning how to read and write in both English and spanish.
The Academy for Global Citizenship is committed to helping students learn sustainable practices while maintaining a rigorous academic program. Students get hands on practice in the garden, the greenhouse, and in caring for chickens. (Theyʻre hoping for a barn one day!)
Both schools were inspirational, and reminded us that commitment to a vision and use of best practices gives students the opportunity to be academically successful!
Today weʻll be reviewing SLIP goal #3- pilina.
In support of that goal, Liana will be sharing about blogging ideas.
Here is one of our favorite resources. Blogs and Blogging Ideas
Specials teachers visited Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park in order to continue their professional development training in Moenahā and culture-based education. Teachers visited Kilauea and learned about the connection of Hawaiian oral history and the scientific history of the volcano.
With your group, please discuss your data or SLIP section and complete the appropriate form below.
Hint: If you want to use your answers when sharing out, wait to submit until after you have shared (or they will disappear into cyberspace.)
This is just a short note to remind you that all faculty are or will be scheduled for SMART goals conferences with either Mai or I this month.
We look forward to reconnecting with you and to learning how we can support your efforts.
Please review your goals and be ready to discuss:
Describe your progress towards achieving your goal. What actions did you take?
What is your analysis of what happened as you made adjustments? Present your data/evidence of student results after modifications/changes were made.
Discuss your new understandings and changes in your practice which will enhance student achievement/progress.
As a friendly reminder, these are the same reflection questions that you do at the end of the year reflection in your portfolio or Success Factors (for Ka Pi`ina field testers).
Flora will be scheduling for me and Healani for Mai.
Please don’t hesitate to call for kōkua if you have any questions.
