What’s going on in 3B?

Aloha, Friends~

Mr. Kudo did a wonderful lesson today on friendship. The keiki participated in an activity that allowed them to recognize positive traits/characteristics that their peers possess. In addition, they discussed the importance of friends and the traits that we look for in a friend. I had some great pictures to share but was unable to upload them due to some technical difficulties with my camera or computer. I hope to post the pics next week.

Our haumana learned a lot in this past month of school. In language arts our focus is on using reading strategies to improve our reading comprehension. We’ve been reading lots of non-fiction articles to practice strategies to monitor our comprehension and to help us “fix-up” our comprehension when we find it breaking down. Furthermore, students are learning to be highly engaged when reading by reacting to the text by using post-it notes and leaving their tracks (thoughts) directly onto a text. Lots of talk and discussions are going on about what we read. Encourage your child to share with you these strategies that they are learning and to use them when they read at home.

In math we’ve been using lots of strategies as well. The kids have been introduced to strategies to do addition and subtraction in their heads. This is something you can have them practice while driving home in the car. Give them a 2-digit number to add to another 2-digit number and ask them to add it mentally. Tell them to explain to you their thought process. If you’re having a hard time understanding their thinking, ask them to bring home their math classwork to show you how we’re doing it in class. This is a difficult skill for the students to master, so practice, practice, practice will really help!

We’re doing so many other things in school including learning about our government and the election process, writing personal narratives and cause and effect essays, and even using different skills in swimming. I’m so proud of the students for working hard and keeping a positive attitude in school.

Thank you ‘ohana for supporting your children and making sure they are present in school and fulfilling their kuleana! It truly is a great start to a great year!
