Have you noticed how the math homework being sent home is a bit different from traditional math? The last few weeks in math class have been spent on introducing and using different math strategies to add and subtract numbers efficiently.
So far these are the strategies and tools we’ve used in class:
1. Adding and Subtracting by Place
2. Add One Number in Parts
3. Using a Number Line to Add
4. 8 Steps Model Drawing Strategy
5. 100 chart
6. 100 grid
7. 200 chart
8. Math Games- Collect $2.00 and Capture 5
When time permits, please have your child visit IXL.com and work on the following categories:
– Place Value
– Addition
– Subtraction
Some of the skills may not have been introduced yet, in which case just have them skip that skill and return to it later. Give them a paper and pencil as they do the IXL problems so they can show you some of the strategies they’ve learned this year. It’s amazing what they can do!
