We all know that kupuna have an integral role in our families, communities, and society. Here at Kamehameha Schools Hawai`i Kula Ha`aha`a, it is no different. For 8 years now Noelani Ho`opai, who is the manager of the East Hawai`i Regional Resource Center, has worked in partnership with our school to provide kupuna resource services. Our haumana from grades Kindergarten to second have the privilege of meeting with kupuna individually or in groups to share their reading and writing once a month during the school year. I can personally attest to the excitement of the keiki when the kupuna are on campus. Teaching first grade for 7 years here at Kamehameha, there was never a hand that was left down to be chosen to read with the kupuna. The kupuna are also a resource for cultural practices such as teaching our keiki hula for the elementary school’s May Day Program. If there are ways in which you think the kupuna can be of service to you please do not hesitate to call Aunty Noe at 935-0116.
