The Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Marine Science Department are planning “Ocean Day, Hawai‘i 2011” on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 10 am – 3 pm. Thanks to the efforts of our presenters on the past three events, we have provided a great opportunity for our community to learn about oceans, coastal resources and knowledge, and research related to our island’s ocean resources. With over 500 people attending the first year (2007), 1000 at the 2008 event, and over 1,200 at the last event (2009), Ocean Day Hawai‘i will again be an annual event at our Keaukaha Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) facility.

It promises to be a fun-filled, educational community outreach event, open to everyone. The aims of “Ocean Day, Hawai‘i” are to: 1) Raise public awareness of the impact people have on the ocean environment; 2) Promote ways of living that favor conservation of marine habitats and sustainability of resources in a culturally sensitive way; and 3) Communicate the outcomes of current ocean and coastal research, management and education efforts here in Hawai‘i.
