Get your PINK on!

get your PINK on

Today, the faculty, staff and students from grades K to 12 were wearing all sorts of pink to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Those who wanted to wear pink brought in a dollar donation, which will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  This foundation is dedicated to educating the community about breast cancer and supports those affected by breast cancer and the research for a cure.

This event is significant to our school because our founder, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop passed away from breast cancer.

Every year thousands of supporters for breast cancer participate in Race for the Cure. It is a walk/run event dedicated to breast cancer research and for supporting loved ones who have died or survived the battle with breast cancer. Survivors can be identified by those wearing the pink shirts. I’ve participated in Race for the Cure in Oregon and it was huge. Families and friends make shirts and hats and banners to show support for loved ones who have passed away from breast cancer or survived. It was a very special and heartwarming event to participate in.

This weekend, Honolulu will be having a Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure on Sunday, October 16, 2011. I’m sure that if you would like to participate you can register the day of the race. If you do, please send pictures of the event. We’d love to see all the support for this event.

Haumana: How does it feel knowing that your donation is going to a foundation that will help others affected by breast cancer and maybe even find a cure?
