1G: Observing Plants Like Scientists

It was a beautiful day so we decided to go outside and look at the plants around our classroom. The students first learned about how to use a clipboard and how scientists use them. As you can see in the first picture, they are ready to go out and observe like scientists.

Using their eyes and sometimes their sense of touching, gently so not to harm the plants, they compared three plants. They documented their comparisons on their clipboard data sheet. Students pointed out similarities, such as each has leaves and stems, same color of leaves. Observant students noticed that each plant had different veins on the leaves, or the stems hard different texture on it.

Though it was hot, students found a great way to keep making observations by using the shade provided by the ulu tree. Aren’t they resourceful.
