Why do we use simple machines? Ask some of the 4th graders as they are studying simple machines. In Tread Lightly students are to compare different types of surfaces and how well it moves things. Using their shoes, students pulled their shoes across the surface of the table and measured the amount of force used to move it by using a spring scale. They tested to see which used the most or least amount of force. First they tested pulling over sandpaper, then the bare table and finally the table coated with oil. Which one do you think used the most or least amount of force to pull the shoe across it?
