Students in 5B class have started their adventure to designing, constructing and racing their solar boats. Each group is to use recycled materials with the exception of the motor, propeller, and solar panel, to created a racing boat. The boat must travel 2 meters within 15 seconds by using solar power to run its motor. They’ll have to problem solve challenges such as unbalanced boats, backwards propellers, and even battling the “What if it’s not sunny?” dilemma.
The boats will participate in HELCO’s 4th Annual Solar Boat Regatta on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Hilo Intermediate School. I’m very excited to see this year’s boats at the regatta.
