Ever stumble upon an unusual looking rock or recieve, but don’t know what it is? You probably have to ask a geologist what it is. A geologist is a person who studies earth materials such as rocks and minerals.
Our 3rd graders are certainly becoming geologists as they explore how to identify rocks by looking at its physical properties. They have to describe the color, luster, how it feels, measure how much it weighs, shape, its hardness and describe other special features. This is how scientists classify and identify rocks and minerals.
They’ll be learning more about rocks and minerals in their upcoming classes, as well as fossils. Stay tuned for more!
