Whale Counters Needed On Island

Did you know that the Hawaiian waters is a sanctuary for the humpback whales? It is known as the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.  A sanctuary is a place of refuge and safety.

During the winter months, the humpback whales migrate to the waters of Hawai`i to give birth to their babies.  In warm calm waters are perfect for the baby whales to be born and be nurtured by their mothers before the long migration back to the Alaskan waters.

Every year around this time volunteers help to count whales along the shorelines at more than 60 sites.  This year they will be counting on January 29, February 26 and March 26. If you are interested in being a volunteer to count whales, go to the links below for more information. It would be a great family activity and wonderful way to see whales.
