Invertebrate Wet Lab

Senior Amanda Kekahuna from our high school has a deep passion for marine life. She feels that not many people care about the environment.  So for her Senior Legacy Project Amanda decided to educate young students about the sea creatures that make their homes in the ocean and shorelines.  Amanda wanted the students know that learning can be fun through hands-on activities. So Amanda created a marine invertebrate wet lab for the students.

Amanda had a wonderful powerpoint presentation that included pictures with facts about a variety of marine invertebrates.  She talked about their characteristics and even taught them the Hawaiian names.  Amanda worked really hard in order to collect a variety of marine invertebrates for this presentation.

The second graders were able to feel, touch, and hold many marine invertebrates that she had collected.  There were brittle stars, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, hermit crabs, and much more.  The students LOVED it.  Some students had never touched sea creatures such as these and were so excited to be able to do so.  Many were very surprised at how the animals felt. We even had a student who was afraid at first but then was finally able hold a sea urchin.

Mahalo nui Amanda for a wonderful experience with the marine invertebrates. I know that the students were fully engaged and loved getting their hands wet.  All the best of luck in your future and we would love to have you come back to teach us more about marine invertebrates and the ocean.
