PERFORMANCE TASK

Project 03: Conceptual Art–Word/Text Play
Students will be able to:
Develop an idea for a design inspired by the Conceptual Art of Word/Text play.  Language as art.

Project 03: Conceptual Art–Word/Text Play scaffolds off of Project 02: Typography–Font Maoli Hou, the students create their own Maoli inspired font.  Students begin to understand the anatomy and design of fonts.  Project 03 builds on this experience by seeing words/text as a possibility for creative expression in the fine arts.  Students are also introduced to the movement of Conceptual Art and artists such as Barbara Kruger and Vernon Ah Kee.

ANNOTATION

Craftsmanship

Effective use of media/tools. Substantial attention to detail.

The student example displays a proficient use of Adobe Photoshop (effective use of tools such as paint bucket; eraser tool; color palette; scaling) in working towards a final product for submittal. Student used numerous revisions to further address detailed design issues.

Details addressed in work:

  • Color choice: white draws viewers eye to eyes and teeth
  • Colors and word repetition help to communicate theme
  • Variation of shape: different sizes of teeth, large mouth, shape of eyes.

Design Process

Effective use of sources and information to work through a creative problem.
Independently develops ideas.

The student example displays a proficient use of the established design process of online research, thumbnail sketching, final design draft and use of desired media–pencil, marker, acrylics, collage, digital, etc… transferring a physical design to a digital design.
The student displayed proficient independent work habits as they developed concept/ideas from beginning to end of project with little assistance from myself.

Intended Communication

Intent is generally clear; visual impact engages the targeted audience.

The student example demonstrates proficiency by the use of the English word of war repeated to represent the meaning or purpose of the Maoli cultural image/student representation of the war god Kūka’ilimoku in his akua hulumanu form.  Student used Adobe Photoshop to execute their idea.  Clean and clear.  Use of colors create an engaging visual work.  Target audience had been preparing for the Hō’ike performance of Kuamo’o.

For this project to be advanced, student could have created a 3D interpretation of the idea.
