PERFORMANCE TASK

The haʻawina is to hoʻopaʻa naʻau, memorize, an introduction piece. The goal for this assignment is for them to be able to recite culturally appropriate information about themselves in a real-life conversation. It opens the lines of communication, even if elementary, with other Hawaiian language speakers, in and outside the classroom.

ANNOTATION

Task Completion

Statements made by the haumāna relate to the topic of the assignment (to memorize an introduction piece).  Student provided sufficient information about themselves, and the presentation itself showed some organization of thought.

Comprehensibility

Speech was fully comprehensible to a sympathetic listener despite possessing a seemingly memorized “flow,” rather than extemporaneous speech.

Fluency

The haumāna’s speech was continuous despite a few pauses.

Pronunciation

The haumāna’s speech did at times bear the influence of English as a first language, but did not interfere with the communication of her message.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary was used accurately and appropriately to the level of the class and the task.

Language Control

Language was used correctly most of the time. Based on the rubric, this might place this particular trait into the Advanced level.  One could tell that this speech was well-rehearsed.
