Grade 7-8: Visual Arts

PERFORMANCE TASK

This writing example is a gift card attached to a t-shirt that the student made for a hospital patient. The student was tasked with explaining their Hawaiian language text and design to the patient so that they would understand the meaning and sentiment behind their shirt.

Welina mai kāua,
What’s new, what’s poppin? I hope you’re having an amazing day and you are healthy and strong. The shirt that I have designed for you today is one of my favorite sayings that I have translated into Hawaiian. “E Nānā Aʻe I Ka Mahina,” it means to look up to the moon. This saying means that when everything goes wrong or things arenʻt going the way you want it to you can look up to the moon and keep moving forward, hoʻomau. My pattern is a mahina or moon surrounded by ʻao or clouds with the saying in them. I wanted to include this manaʻo onto your shirt because I know you are going through lots of things and I wanted you to know that you are never alone and when you feel alone remember, you can always look up to the moon and it will watch over you and always be with you.

Mahalo and lots of aloha, XXXX
