PERFORMANCE TASK

Mai ʻŪpiki Iaʻu (Donʻt Pinch Me!)

This is a culminating performance task of our measurement unit which incorporated previous concepts and strategies of 2 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping as well as problem-solving. The timing of this performance task was relevant to the upcoming St. Patrickʻs Day holiday. Haumana were required to:

  • Decide on a style of bow they would like to create for themselves and 3 other friends
  • Correctly measure the desired length of ribbon in centimeters
  • Calculate the total length of ribbon (in centimeters) they would need for all 4 bows
  • Calculate the cost to make one bow based on the ribbon they chose
  • Calculate the cost for all 4 bows based on the ribbon they chose
  • Show and explain how they arrived at their answers

ANNOTATION

Problem Solving

Student decomposed numbers using 10s and 1s in order to use repeated addition to solve problem.

Representation

Student used repeated addition accurately.

Communication

Student sequentially and clearly communicates the process/steps he took to arrive at his solution.

To be advanced: Student could show another strategy such as a number line to show his calculations and mathematical thinking. Student could use specific vocabulary to defend the solution such as “I used a number line to … and I subtracted and added….”
