PERFORMANCE TASK

G (goal)

  • Your task is to introduce yourself and your family in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.
  • At Kula Haʻahaʻa, the keiki encounter various situations in which they are asked to recognize and introduce their ʻohana.
    • Alakaʻi: At wā oli in the morning, keiki are given the opportunity to introduce him/herself. Expectations are scaffolded for each grade level to prepare keiki in learning about their own families and develop speaking skills.
    • Hāweo luncheon: Parents are invited to join their keiki for lunch. The keiki introduce their family members in attendance to the other grade levels.

R (role)

  • Interviewee
  • Rather than memorize a prepared speech, the keiki respond to questions similar to an interview.

A (audience)

S (situation)

  • Meeting new people builds new relationships. We want to be ready to answer questions that people may ask while getting to know us.
  • Note: Keiki will be using this skill in introducing themselves at wā oli in the morning, as well as introduce their families at our Hāweo luncheon. These are both cases in which they will use the learned skill in real life situations, which sometimes are not caught on video.

P (product or performance)

  • You will introduce yourself, your father, your mother, and tell us where you live. (Keiki will try to use full names.)
  • You will also recognize others with whom you may be familiar.

ANNOTATION

Task Completion

Haumana answers all nīnau, as expected in goal criteria – Just as an interview, keiki is able to display speaking skills with confidence and full comprehension. Hoʻolauna of self and ʻohana is evident.

Comprehensibility

Haumana responds correctly and understands questions-ʻO wai kou inoa, Noho ʻoe i hea? ʻO wai kou makuakane, ʻO wai kēia (in which case a kiʻi is shown to keiki), ʻO wai kou kumu? a pēlā aku. – Understands questions.

Fluency

Haumana only hesitates once but still maintains confident and mālie while answering nīnau; no mistakes are made.

Pronunciation

Haumana uses puana proficiently by pronouncing all hua ʻōlelo correctly-Communication is clear.

Vocabulary

Haumana uses vocab correctly-Makuahine, inoa, koʻu, noho, au, i, makuakane, kona, kēlā. – Familiar with hua ʻōlelo and able to use.

Language Control

Haumana emerges in the ʻŌlelo by answering all nīnau ma ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi-Not recited, evident that she understood kumu and stayed on task.
