Grade 9-12: Languages
Makahiki ʻElua

PERFORMANCE TASK

The haʻawina is to hoʻopaʻa naʻau, memorize, an introduction piece. The goal for this
assignment is for them to be able to recite culturally appropriate information about a friend.

ANNOTATION

Task Completion

Statements made by the haumāna relate to the task prompt.  Sufficient information was provided about her hoaaloha to substantiate an introduction. (Her name, age, where she lives, who her Hawaiian teacher is, what her favorite food is, what she likes to do.)

Comprehensibility

The haumāna’s speech is readily comprehensible, requiring no interpretation on the part of the listener.  A native speaker would most likely understand her as well.  As a result, this particular trait may be rated as “Advanced.”

Fluency

Speech is continuous with only a few unnatural pauses.

Pronunciation

Although there is some evidence of English influence as a first language, the haumāna’s pronunciation does not interfere with the communication of her message.

Vocabulary

Student uses a variety of previously-learned vocabulary in an accurate way.

Language Control

Language usage is accurate most of the time.  There were a few minor errors (i.e. no “He” in front of ʻumikumamālima(0:10); mispronunciation of “mea ‘ai” as “mea ‘aie”(0:25); a possibly garbled “i” in front of “keia makahiki”(0:33)).  Based on the rubric, this particular trait might be rated as “Advanced.”
