{"id":358,"date":"2012-10-01T10:02:48","date_gmt":"2012-10-01T20:02:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/doe-lis\/?p=358"},"modified":"2012-10-01T10:02:48","modified_gmt":"2012-10-01T20:02:48","slug":"common-core-and-its-impact-on-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/doe-lis\/2012\/10\/01\/common-core-and-its-impact-on-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Core and Its Impact on Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/curriculum\/2012\/09\/common_core_reaches_into_scien.html\">http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/curriculum\/2012\/09\/common_core_reaches_into_scien.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his blog, Erik Robeson uses data,collected by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsta.org\/\">National Science Teachers Association<\/a>, to\u00a0provide some clues as to the impact of the Common Core Standards upon science teaching and learning.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;To be clear, the data collected through the NSTA survey do not reflect a nationally representative sampling of science teachers. Even so, the results offer helpful clues as to what&#8217;s happening on the ground.\u00a0Nearly 400 science teachers from 34 states responded to the online survey, though response rates varied from question to question. &#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s an interesting read that addresses some far-reaching questions such as: How much support are science teachers receiving to teach to the CCSS?\u00a0 Why are the ELA standards having a greater role than the Math standards in science education?\u00a0 To what extent\u00a0are the decisions of the educational leadership based on an understanding of both the CCSS and NGSS?\u00a0 The bright side here is that most of the science teachers who did respond do see a positive impact on science from the use of the CCSS.\u00a0 While there is concern that attention to the CCSS lessens the instructional time\/quality for inquiry-based science, there is also the hope for deeper collaboration as ALL teachers come to see &#8220;Literacy in the service of learning in the desciplines&#8221;
