{"id":496,"date":"2011-10-07T14:40:16","date_gmt":"2011-10-08T00:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/aahirano\/?p=496"},"modified":"2011-10-07T14:40:16","modified_gmt":"2011-10-08T00:40:16","slug":"haloa-ka-%ca%bbonohi-lama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/2011\/10\/07\/haloa-ka-%ca%bbonohi-lama\/","title":{"rendered":"H\u0101loa ka \u02bb\u014dnohi lama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Class of 2013<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ka \u02bb\u014dnohi lama (glowing center)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lama n. endemic ebony; torch;<\/p>\n<p>\u02bb\u014dnohi n. center; figurative \u201ceye\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u02bb\u014cnohi<\/strong> is most frequently associated with the eye, especially the center.\u00a0 It is the core of a being.\u00a0 O\u02bbahu was sometimes referred to as \u201cO\u02bbahu, ka \u02bb\u014dnohi o n\u0101 kai\u201d \u2013 <em>O\u02bbahu the gem of the islands<\/em> (O\u02bbahu is the principal island of the group) because of its role as the center of governement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lama <\/strong>is often used as a symbol of enlightenment because by definition it is a torch.\u00a0 In fashioning a torch, many kukui were needed.\u00a0 These kukui would be secured to a staff and the natural oil within became the fuel for the torch.\u00a0 The class of 2013 is like this torch with each individual an integral part of the light created.\u00a0 Many h\u0101lau have a block of <strong>lama<\/strong> as the centerpiece of the kuahu.\u00a0 This is the place that Laka would reside and provide enlightenment for the \u02bb\u014dlapa.\u00a0 The wood of the <strong>lama<\/strong> was used as posts for houses and often used as the center post.\u00a0 It was also used in fashioning fish traps because of their strength.<\/p>\n<p>Together, <strong>ka \u02bb\u014dnohi lama<\/strong>, is the center torch of a group like a beacon of leadership.<\/p>\n<p>In hope that the class of 2013 can be the beacons of our future.<\/p>\n<p><em>H\u0101loa ka \u02bb\u014dnohi lama \u00a0(the glowing center reaches far)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Krauss, Beatrice H.\u00a0<em>Plants in Hawaiian culture<\/em>.
