{"id":418,"date":"2010-10-04T12:51:20","date_gmt":"2010-10-04T22:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogsksbeedu.wpenginepowered.com\/aahirano\/?p=418"},"modified":"2010-10-04T12:51:20","modified_gmt":"2010-10-04T22:51:20","slug":"welo-hayaheo-me-he-kahili-koaye-la-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/2010\/10\/04\/welo-hayaheo-me-he-kahili-koaye-la-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Welo ha\u00ffaheo me he k\u00e4hili koa\u00ffe l\u00e4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although we are most familiar with \u00ff\u00f6lelo no\u00ffeau that have been passed down by kupuna over the generations, there are times when penning a new \u00ff\u00f6lelo no\u00ffeau is warranted.\u00a0 Maybe because it marks a specific event or person, perhaps it involves new technologies not around when during the time of our kupuna or maybe we have just not yet found it.<\/p>\n<p>Such is the case with this \u00ff\u00f6lelo no\u00ffeau &#8220;Welo ha\u00ffaheo me he k\u00e4hili koa\u00ffe l\u00e4&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Fly proud like a koa\u00ffa feather standard<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like the previous post in this category <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/aahirano\/2010\/10\/01\/na-mamo-a-ke-kipi\/\">N\u00e4 Mamo a Ke Kipi<\/a>, this \u00ff\u00f6lelo no\u00ffeau is used to describe the characteristics of a class of the Kamehameha Schools.<\/p>\n<p>Kamehameha Schools Hawai\u2018i\u2019s class of 2012 has been described as genuine, loyal, cohesive, respectful, playful, athletic, pathfinders, visionaries, expressive, and talented. It is with these characteristics in mind that the name K\u00e4hili Koa\u2018e was decided upon as the name for the class of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The k\u00e4hili a symbol of royalty and nobility, like the banners of feudal kingdoms around the world, announced the presence of an ali\u2018i.\u00a0 The class of 2012 holds themselves to such high expectations that their peers, their teachers, and their families admire them.\u00a0 The respect they have shown and receive is genuine and noble. Two thousand and twelve marks the 125<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Kamehameha Schools, as a part of the combined quasquicentennial class of 2012 of Kamehameha Schools the metaphor of a k\u00e4hili is used to honor Pauahi.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The koa\u2018e also called the tropicbird is a seabird that nest high on inaccessible cliffs.\u00a0 The koa\u2018e are known to hunt out at sea far from land, but will always return to their nest. These loyal birds choose lifelong mates and lay just one egg per season. Both parents incubate this solitary egg and after hatching both parents share the responsibility of feeding and brooding.\u00a0 These characteristics of the koa\u2018e are shared also with the class of 2012 as they are a visionary class that sets the path for the future.\u00a0 While hunting the koa\u2018e will rapidly flap their wings to gain momentum, then glide above the ocean as they search for fish.\u00a0 The hunt culminates in the sudden plunge into the sea to capture their meal.\u00a0 This athleticism is also a characteristic shared by the class of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The tail feathers of the koa\u2018e are high prized for k\u00e4hili as each bird has but two tail feathers and their nest are in difficult to reach clifffaces.\u00a0 The art to bind the feathers of the koa\u2018e into a k\u00e4hili represents the cohesiveness of this class as well as the way they express their talents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although we are most familiar with \u00ff\u00f6lelo no\u00ffeau that have been passed down by kupuna over the generations, there are times when penning a new \u00ff\u00f6lelo no\u00ffeau is warranted.\u00a0 Maybe because it marks a specific event or person, perhaps it &hellip;
