What’s in a name?

Have you ever wondered why certain place have nicknames that seem so obscure?  Or what the traditional name of that place may be?  For all the negativity that non-traditional names have been getting recently there is also something to be learned from those very names.  Many surf spots around the islands have been nicknamed for landmarks, owners, or even events in history.  Sometimes doing a little research on these nicknames can give us a glimpse of the past.  Recently on ‘Aha‘i ‘Ölelo Ola on KGMB a story ran about this very subject and the popular surf spot “Publics” in Waikïkï.  What many think of as a contemporary issue, access, is the real impetus for this wahi pana.
