KS preschools use the Work Sampling System®, which is a comprehensive approach for observing, evaluating and tracking student learning and progress and used as a guide for instructional planning. The Work Sampling System® gives you detailed information about what your child knows and can do at school. It charts your child’s performance in the following areas:
• Personal and Social Development
• Language and Literacy
• Mathematical Thinking
• Scientific Thinking
• Social Studies
• The Arts
• Physical Development
The Work Sampling System® replaces the traditional report card by using the following:
• Developmental Guidelines & Checklists: cover seven domains/subject areas: (1) personal and social development, (2) language and literacy, (3) mathematical thinking, (4) scientific thinking, (5) social studies, (6) the arts, and (7) physical development and are divided into performance indicators that represent important skills, knowledge and behaviors. The guidelines and checklists create a profile of your child’s individual progress and are based on national, state and local curriculum standards.
• Portfolios: are a collection of your child’s work that illustrates efforts, understandings, progress and achievements. The portfolios provide authentic, rich documentation of your child’s experiences throughout the year.
• Summary Reports: are brief summaries of your child’s classroom performance based on teacher observations. The reports are a means of translating information from the developmental checklists and the portfolios. They are completed three times a year for your child.
