Homework Guidelines for Parents

In preschool, homework is an enrichment activity designed for parents and children to learn and have fun together! Homework also develops children’s sense of responsibility, fosters good habits, and prepares them for the expectations and demands of elementary school. Having educational materials available and a quiet space to work makes homework time inviting and special for children. Below are suggestions for supporting your child’s learning at home.

SETTING
• Establish a regular time for homework
• Limit television viewing
• Provide a well-lighted, quiet area

MATERIALS
• Child-sized scissors
• Crayons
• Pencils
• Glue or glue stick
• Old magazines and newspapers

WORK HABITS
• Know how much time should be spent on homework. (Usually no more than 20 minutes)

• You are your child’s assistant. Homework assignments are prepared for students to complete with minimal adult assistance.

• Please note that the beauty and value of your child’s work will be exhibited in his/her effort of completing this activity.

• As you work on this with your keiki, please allow your keiki to be the facilitator.

• Check to see that homework is completed carefully.

• Check to see that your child’s name is on each assignment.
