Even more things learned at GAFE Summit in Honolulu

Some of the highlights on Day two… Molly Schroeder covered some great examples of tools to use for flipping your class. She mentioned several of the tools many of you already know about such as Google Voice, Jing, Screencastomatic, Camtasia, and of course Youtube for teachers.
*One of the take aways here was how flexible Youtube is that you can actually create your own video recording within Youtube and use the video editor for additional features such as pausing the time frames, adding bubbles, or links. And if you use Google sites, you could embed the Youtube video next to a form and have students fill out the form as they watch the video side by side.

Kern Kelley – District-Wide Implementation of Google Apps
He covered several interesting ideas on how he gets students involved and this one below as probably one that caught my attention:
*Every Tuesday at 3:00 EST his students host a session called “Live with Tech Sherpas” (TechSherpas.org)
*cool way to have students on Google Hangouts and people can ask questions live and this is open to anyone interested in learning something new or to ask a question

Chris Bell, GCT, Saddleback Valley Unified & EdTechTeam, Inc. hosted a session on 25+Ways to USe Google Tools for Online & Blended Learning. One thing he shared was to try to focus more on connection with the students and timeliness of collecting and providing feedback. He mentions such tools as Socrative student and InfuseLearning.com to receive responses from students in real time.

Chris also covered several of the more popular apps from Google like Google+ for book clubs, practicing language skills, and creating communities; Google Groups which helps to build independence and a sense of community to share ideas and thoughts; Google Calendar which can be embedded in almost anything such as an LMS and you can attach assignments to your calendar.
In the Demo Slam, Chris covered a site called IFTTT.com. IFTTT is a service that lets you create powerful connections with one simple statement: If This, Then That. It allows you to almost create shortcuts or scripts to have triggers and actions attached to images or links.

What I Learned at GAFE Hawaii Summit 2013

I will highlight some of the things I learned at the GAFE Summit which was held at University of Phoenix Downtown Honolulu.

This was a two day summit highlighting some of the great features that Google has to offer. They brought a group of trainers and mixed in some of our own local presenters.

The Keynote speaker was Mark and the take away from that was “Search, Learn, and Share -Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

On day one I attended Mark Wagner’s Google Search for Educators and Google Docs. This was a fast paced session and he mentioned several interesting facts about. Advance search form at the bottom of the page:
*only 3% who use Google search use this feature
*allows  you to get specific types of files in advance search such as file types, usage   rights, and reading levels
*This is a valuable skill to teach students and teachers to fine tune their searches
*In Spreadsheet format, you can also convert it to a form – Go to Tools – Convert to Form
Mark also covered:
*Books.google.com
-The left side of screen is to make information accessible and useful to the users
*Scholar.google.com
-This is a great resource for searching out academic articles and resources
*News.google.com
-helps to get news that is currently being discussed around the world
*Google Goggles
-is a downloadable image recognition application created by Google, which can be currently found on the Mobile Apps page of Google Mobile. It is used for searches based on pictures taken by handheld devices.

The another session was on Google Docs and Google+ by Wendy Gorton.  She provided some neat links and information.
*Here is another A link to participate in a 20/20 challenge for Science and Global issues
*Students learn about cutting edge research and carer by talking directly to scientists, technicians, and crew as they live and work aboard the magnificent 183 meter JOIDES Resolution.

First PD Teaching of Blackboard

Wow! Is all I can say! This was truly a first for me conducting a blackboard session with my peers and having all my fellow ITRTs around supporting each other. The start of the school year

Being the new kid on the block, I was so amazed at how Mimi and Cy conducted the various lessons. Mimi did the new teachers training and covered some essential things new teachers need…KS connect, and basic computer useage. While Cy was across the room doing his training with teachers who had their MAC computers re-imaged.

I was also impressed with the comraderie that ETS has with a lunch time get together before the start of the new school year…the food was great! Hat off to the chef Chris!

And then after that great time, Cy allowed me to sit in on his Blackboard training and I was also able to contribute a little bit to get my feet wet. All in all, I truly enjoyed the support that is given and the appreciation teachers have for the training they receive at middle school. I strive to be as efficient and knowledgeable as my mentor and everyone else in ETS.

I look forward to Monday!

ETS-I at work

This was my first experience as part of ETS-I group and I came away with so much enthusiasm and information. I thought it was very productive, so much so that we were even doing some shop talk while at breaks, lunch, and dinner.

I came away with great information and understanding in things such as Web 2.0 tools, Personal Learning Network with Netvibes, and this KS Blog! I really would like to thank Darrin, Al, Cy, Nate, Mimi, Melia, and Chandell for a great experience and a new friendship.
