On Wednesday, May 8th, we celebrated nine young artists. These students had work selected to hang at the Hawaiʻi Convention Center for an entire year. The theme was Celebrating Hawaiʻi with Family and Friends…so we did just that. Timing and resources restricted travel to Honolulu for the opening celebration, but we had ohana join us for a recognition lunch with classmates enjoying a slide show of their work. I continue to marvel at our creative keiki. Each child received a certificate, framed copy of their art work as well as a goodie bag full of art supplies. Congratulation to first graders, Lucas and Tehani as well as fifth graders Kayla, Travis, Anela, Malia, Tatum, Emma and Kaohinani.

As the 2012-13 school year comes to a close, Kamehameha Schools celebrates its ongoing partnership with EHCC as we showcase student work from Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work highlight the artistic growth that is an integral part of each childʻs Kamehameha education. As in the past middle school students were proud to assist by fabricating frames to display the artwork. The show opened on May 3rd and will run until the end of the month. It was great to have our principal Mrs. Nāeole-Wong helped us celebrate.

On Saturday, March 1st, twenty-five students will be acknowledged for their fabulous art in the annual Young at Art Show. Stay tuned for a blog post next week sharing photos of the exciting event.

I am also excited to announce that five of our kiekiʻs works have been selected to hang at the State Capitol for the month of March. (108 artworks were chosen by judges from a field of nearly 400 submissions.)
Congratulations to Hiʻilani (First Grade), Kalissa and Kahiau (First Grade), Hayden (Third Grade) and Kayla (Fifth Grade). Students will be recognized and awards presented in Honolulu later in March. This show is supported by the Hawaii Art Educators Association, Senator David Ige and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. Congratulations to these young artists!

Learning how to create a bowl using a slab technique took very little time and within an hour every participant had a bowl to take home and a bowl to donate. Teachers laughed as they worked. Comments included “You can tell this was made by a kindergarten teacher!”… “Letʻs do this again!”…”Do you think someone will really want to buy mine!”and then there was the kumu who said “Can I buy mine back…I really like it!”

Teachers welcomed five A+ fifth graders to join in the fun. Learning and creating right along side their Kumu made for a memorable experience. Next on the agenda is an afternoon of glazing.

Fourth grade students will also be involved and add to the collection of bowls. On February 16th at Hoʻolaulea family and friends will have a chance to see the final results. Get there early to pick your favorite bowl. Proceeds will be given to the Hawaiʻi Island Food Basket.

During my early years of teaching I can remember going to the State Library and checking out a huge real to real film titled Why Man Creates. For years I have been searching for this flick on VHS or DVD with little success. I even tried Netflix, Amazon and e-bay. Today…just by chance I Googled the title and who would have guessed that it is on YouTube.

It is a chance for all audience to know that fooling around with ideas is o.k. It is acceptable to start something and to achieve it. It is o.k. to revise an idea or to abandon it and not fear failure! It is part of the creative process. It is also important for us to remember artists are not the only people who are creative. Scientists, engineers, and multiple other careers need people to think “outside of the box!”

To my fifth graders, please watch the video again. Click here to view the two part film. Reflect on the following three questions and share your manao. (1)What does creativity mean? (2)What makes people creative? and finally (3) WHY DOES MAN CREATE?

As we prepare for ourannual Christmas concert, a huge project each year is decorating Hā’aeamahi Dining Hall. However, with the help of over twenty parents and their choir keiki, the task was accomplished in an hour and a half. Mrs. Debus and I continue to be thankful for dad’s that moved trees, trouble shooting faulty lights and Mom’s who fluff bows, decorated trees, and hang the stockings. A few daring souls even climbed the 12 foot ladder! Children showed their enthusiasm and excitement as they helped decorate the lower branches of the Christmas trees. With the help of all these elves…opps…I mean parents, the dining hall is just about ready for those angelic voices on December 7th. We also need to say thank you to a crew of lower elementary parents who helped prep costumes for our eighty soldiers. We could not have done it without you. Mahalo…and Happy Holiday’s.
