It’s swim time for the lower elementary and the weather has been great! Swim with the kick board, swim with the rings, bobbing, kicking and swimming with your friends. It was a great time and everyone seemed to enjoy the water. Students learned a few skills like bobbing, flutter kick, and a beginning toward rhythmic breathing.

I want to thank all the parents who took the time to kōkua with supervision in the pool this time. You are all greatly appreciated. I would like to thank the teachers, E.A.’s, Aunty Julie, Aunty Peggy and lifeguard Sean for getting in the pool and sharing their knowledge. Mahalo nui.

Remember to be safe in the water at all times and be prepared for the unexpected. Obey all signs posted for your safety. Have safe and wonderful summer break.

Aloha a hui hou,

Mrs. Lee

A Healthy Transition

Have you ever been nervous or anxious about a change that is coming? The freshman health classes know first hand how it feels transitioning from middle school to high school and all the things that come with that experience.

A senior, Tiari Carreira decided it was important as well and made it her Senior Legacy to have a health fair to share information with our kula ha’a,ha’a fifth graders to help make their transition a healthy one. With the help of all health classes, teachers and the community, Tiari coordinated and planned a great health fair for our students on April 12, 2013. This was our first ever for our own students at kula ha’a ha’a and they loved it!

There were skits, a special song and podcast presentation. Several seniors shared their legacy projects, student health displays, as well as community presentations from Hui Mālama Na O’iwi and the Department of Health.

It was a very enlightening and fun day and the students in Mrs. Pai’s class shared their slam poems that were awesome. Please feel free to add comments to this blog entry; I am sure the high school students would like to hear your manaʻo.

Mahalo nui, to all of you for your generous contributions to a worthy cause. The American Heart Association helps our community fight heart disease and stroke. The students enjoyed jumping, spending time with friends and pledging to a great cause. Everyone had a good time and jumped a variety of jumps from one rope to partner, to long rope, to double Dutch. We have some great jumpers with great skills and stamina. Our winners for longest jump forward and backward in each grade were fabulous, even Kumu Kalā stayed in step with her class. A big thank you to all who came to jump and join in.

Aloha all,

It’s Jump For Heart time again! the students are revving up to be ready to jump on Jump Day- March 1, 2013. They will be starting to sharpen their skills and their endurance in p.e. classes for the weeks to come.

Donation sheets have been sent home with everyone last week. If you did not get one be sure to see me and I will give you one. You may also register online and fundraise that way.
It’s easy, just go to <ahref="http://heart.org/jump">heart.org/jump and they will take you through the steps. All envelopes with monies are due to their home teachers by February 28th.

Please note there is no need to fill out the parent permission form to jump. At Kula Haʻahaʻa everyone participates and it is part of the curriculum for p.e.

Mahalo in advance for your generosity and support of this very needed community based program that helps educate, provides research and assistance with heart disease and stroke.

In P.E./Health classes we have been having fun and learning new activities that help us be kind, polite in our communication with others. Some activities help us to learn new things, to remember things we already learned and to teach what we learned to someone else. Some activities let us learn about each other and how we are alike and how we are different. But best of all the activities are just plain fun!

Grade three is having fun with activities. These classes are doing activities from the “Responsive Classroom, 99 Activities and Greetings”. One is called “Squeeze” and the other is called “Milling To Music”. Ask your third grader to teach you and your family these activities. It should be a lot of fun!

Lono i ka Makahiki!

It was a beautiful day Saturday in Waimea for the 8th Annual Makahiki. Our twelve elementary warriors were up and ready to go very early in the morning. The skies were blue, the air crisp and Mauna Kea clear in the background as the puu sounded to begin the protocol for the day. The keiki were excited and nervous at the same time as this is their first time competing. They rose to the occasion and competed very well in their perspective events. Everyone competed and several placed in each of the events.

Mahalo to all the students who committed themselves to practices and to being there to compete and represent our school. Mahalo to the parents who committed as well.
Special mahalo to Mrs. Pai for her kokua, and Kumu Kaleo and Kumu Kala for their support.

The keiki are already looking forward to next year.

A big mahalo to all the keiki and their ohana for investing time and energy to complete the Fire Safety Booklets this year. We had a great return rate of 247 out of 256 Fire Books completed and returned. Several classes earned an ice cream party with ice cream cups from KTA because they had a 100% class completion and return.
Grades 2A/2B, 3A/3B, 4B, 5A/5B are all planning when to use the ice cream treat for their class, yummy!
That is just a testament to all of you making safety a priority for yourself and your ohana. Learning about ways to keep your family safe from fire and to know what to do in case of fire has been proven to save lives. I enjoy teaching your child how they can be proactive and know what to do when there is a fire.

Mahalo again for your support,

Mrs. Lee

Makahiki was a great success this year. The weather was not consistent enough to have it outdoors so we had it at Keaka Playcourt. The students and teachers had a wonderful time together for pilina and friendly competition. The Makahiki Games 2012 was a day of new year and new beginnings. Kumu Crabbe had the fifth graders do a hula noho as their hoʻokupu this year. It was a beautiful chant and dance for Lonoikamakahiki. The students did a marvelous job of each of the games and cheering on their classmates.

I want to say mahalo to everyone who came and helped out on that day. It would not be possible to do without your kōkua and your blessings.
