As powerful readers, students have been tracking colorful, confusing, and challenging words on their word wise book marker. This is a new addition to our nightly reading log.
The purpose of tracking these words is build our vocabulary, conventions, and comprehension of words authors use to enhance the stories we are reading.
Wondering what are colorful, confusing and challenging words??
Colorful words are words that stand out! We might not hear it so often, but it sounds interesting. Also we might know the meaning and how to sound it out.
Confusing words are words that we might know how to sound out, but we’re unsure of the meaning.
Challenging words are words that we don’t know how to sound and we don’t know what it means.
Once children identify and code these words, then these word are ready to be recognized! In reader’s workshop, students complete vocabulary flip books, share these words with their seat partner, and place them on their personalized chapter book word wall!!
