Project Red: Revolutionizing Education

As we enter our Final Year of this 1:1 Laptop project, it is important to remind ourselves about WHY this was initially started here at Kula Kiʻekiʻe  o Kamehameha Hawaiʻi.

The number one question we get as a project is , does it it make sense for KS TO cotninue these 1:1 laptop programs if there is no evience that they imporove a child’s ability to learn?

The answer is Yes.

Yes, it does make sense for Kamehameha Schools to continue the 1:1 laptop program.  Recently, several research papers have been written to support the use and benefits of student laptop programs.  The most compelling research was recently completed by an independent national research group and presented to the United States Department of Education.  The project is entitled, ‘Project Red[EC1] ’ at http://www.projectred.org

The research from this national study ties 1:1 programs to increased student test scores and financial benefits.  Other research findings are as follows:

Michigan Freedom to Learn Program: http://www.projectred.org/uploads/2005-2006_Evaluatio_Results.pdf

Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI): Maine Learning Technology Initiative – Maine Department of Education

It is not only the research findings that have compelled Kamehameha Schools to implement to a 1:1 student program utilizing Apple computers.  The choice was clear when taking into account the entirety of education.  Our mission at KS is to provide a quality education that will foster their ability to learn and compete in the 21st century. The 1:1 laptop program is an integral part of this movement and provides the tools necessary to prepare students for these 21st century skills.

It is our commitment to the legacy of Princess Pauahi to provide our children with the best possible education.  We believe strongly that all learners should be afforded the tools necessary to prepare students for the 21st century skills.
