Learning Math Concepts Through Play

November 1st, 2011 by napai

Today I’d like to talk about how you can learn and enjoy math at the same time.  Yes, as the title indicates, it’s through play.  Playing math games to learn and reinforce math concepts is highly motivating.  Simply put, it is FUN!!

With the holiday season fast approaching, I offer this idea to you and your parents – BUY A MATH GAME FOR YOUR ʻOHANA FOR CHRISTMAS!  Why not?  Games can be enjoyed by young and old.  There are a wide variety of math games that are available and I’m mentioning this early so that you will be alert to the Christmas sales that will be coming up later this month.

Parents- Go ahead and play with your keiki – you’ll have a new appreciation for the different intelligences that your keiki will demonstrate while playing (visual/spatial, mathematical, etc.).

Keiki – Identify the math games that you love and explain how that math game helps you remember those specific math concepts.  Remember, at least three sentences.

Miss all of you!!

I like connect 4 because you need to know exactly where to put your chips in order for you to trap the opponent and win the game. The same goes to tic tac toe. You have to plan where you will place your X’s and O’s. If I were to chose 1 of these 2, I would choose connect 4 because all you need is a pencil, paper, and knowledge of how to play the game to play.

One of my favorite math games is Monopoly. It helps me remember how to count money, add, multiply, and sometimes give change. For example, it helps me add because if there are more than one die, than you will have to add those numbers up. Another example that helps me with multiplication is if you land on some one’s solar or wind energy, you need to first add the numbers on the dice and times it by ten. Another example that helps me with counting money and giving change is that if you are the banker, you need to give your opponent(s) the exact amount of money unless they can give you change back. MONOPOLY!

One of my favorite math games is Connect Four. i think this game helps in math because you kind of have to use strategy to find out where you’re going to go next and plan your way to get connect four. i think it also helps in math because you have to use what you know about estimating so you can estimate ABOUT how much chips you’ll need to limit the amount you use.

One of my favorite math games are Connect four. Connect four can help out with strategizing where you put your chips. If you do not check carefully on what will happen if you put your chip in one place, it might lead to your enemy having an advantage to win. Another game i like is cribbage. This game teaches how to add up amounts to make 15 or 31 for an extra move. I wonder, what is your favorite math game?
