As these winds meet the steep Ko\u2018olau cliffs, they are forced upward to cool, higher elevation, forming clouds and rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the windward ecosystems of Oahu change rapidly from the dry coast to the wet Ko\u2018olau summit. Nehe, naupaka and hala forest are found along the dry coasts, and in the lowlands.\u00a0 Further inland, koa trees dominate the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/information\/eyes-scientist\/\">mesic<\/a> (neither wet nor dry) forests along with k\u014dlea, ili\u2018ahi, p\u016bkiawe, \u2018a\u2018ali\u2018i and \u2018ala\u2018alawai nui, a succulent herb.\u00a0 Above the mesic forests, the wet Ko\u2018olau cliffs rise into the clouds. Dominated by \u2018\u014dhi\u2018a, this much wetter forest supports a variety of ferns and shrubs, such as endemic lobelioids.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Panel II<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaWaoLipooKaManu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-264\" title=\"Ka Wao Lipo o Ka Manu\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaWaoLipooKaManu-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"Deep Upland of Birds\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaWaoLipooKaManu-300x277.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaWaoLipooKaManu-1024x947.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaWaoLipooKaManu.jpg 2026w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong><em>Ka Wao Lipo o Ka Manu<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nDeep Upland of Birds<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the summit of the Ko\u2018olau mountains, the forest is wet and lush. The great diversity of native trees, shrubs, ferns, herbs, and mosses together form a complex, layered structure that pulls moisture from the air, absorbs the erosive energy of falling raindrops, and allows gradual percolation of water into the ground and into underground acquifers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u014chi\u2018a lehua, m\u0101maki, \u2018\u014dhelo, p\u016b\u2018ahanui, h\u0101h\u0101 and \u2018\u014dh\u0101wai are found here. Native fern such as hapu\u2018u, hoe a M\u0101ui, o\u0101li\u2018i makali\u2018i, and laukahi grow lushly. Many species of delicate and filmy fern and liverworts cover tree branches in the water-saturated air. \u2018Ie\u2018ie, a native liana, spirals up tree trunks.<\/p>\n<p>Lanalana-the happyface spider, pulelehua-the Kamehameha butterfly, the k\u0101huli-beautiful tree snails, many kinds of long horn beetles. and other native invertebrates reside here.<\/p>\n<p>The movement of the \u2018apapane, \u2018i\u2018iwi, akialoa, \u2018amakihi, \u2018\u0101kepa, \u2018elepaio, \u2018\u014d\u2018\u014d, and other native birds add color and wonderful song to this ecosystem<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Panel III<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaPaliLelePueo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-265\" title=\"Ka Pali Lele Pueo\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaPaliLelePueo-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"Pueo Flight Cliff\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaPaliLelePueo-300x277.jpg 300w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaPaliLelePueo-1024x948.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaPaliLelePueo.jpg 2024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong><em> <\/em><em>Ka Pali Lele Pueo<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nPueo Flight Cliff<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the Kona (leeward) side of the Ko\u2018olau mountains, steep-sided long ridges such as the one that runs from Lanihuli down towards Kap\u0101lama, provide a home for a wide variety of plants and animals . At the wet summit, mossy branches of \u2018\u014dhi\u2018a\u00a0 shelter the koli\u2018i. Descending to lower elevation and drier <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/information\/eyes-scientist\/\" target=\"_blank\">mesic<\/a> settings, koa forests, m\u0101mane, naio, and loulu palms are found. Here, ferns are less common and the understory is dominated by native shrubs such as manono, naupaka, \u2018akoko, pilo, and p\u016bkiawe.<\/p>\n<p>The pueo, our day-flying native owl, soars over dry forest and shrubland.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018O\u2018opu and pinao \u2018ula, the red Hawaiian damselfly, are examples of native species living in streams that run through wet valleys such as Nu\u2018uanu and Kalihi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Panel IV<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaLokoWaiOluolu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Ka Loko Wai 'Olu'olu\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/KaLokoWaiOluolu-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"Pleasant Pond\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ksbe.edu\/nanikeaonei\/files\/2011\/07\/Mural-Panel-4.2s-copy.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><strong> <\/strong><strong><em>Ka Loko Wai \u2018Olu\u2018olu <\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nPleasant Pond<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The lowlands of the leeward coast are dry where forests of wiliwili, kou, and halapepe grow. Coastal shrubs such as naio, ma\u2018o, \u2018ilima, naupaka, beach \u2018iliahi, \u2018ohai, p\u0101\u2018\u016b o Hi\u2018iaka, and hinahina are found on sand and limestone flats.<\/p>\n<p>Along the coastal flatlands, groundwater springs provide water and create wetlands. \u2018Alae \u2018ula ,\u2018alae ke\u2018oke\u2018o, ae\u2018o, and other native waterbirds flourish.
