HLA 2011 Fall Conference

Innovative Digital Reading Ideas for Students K-12

Nalani Naluai & Lynne Horiuchi, Kamehameha Elementary School

Empower your students as you help them discover the wonder and excitement of reading in the digital age.  In our session we demonstrated how to use free online sources to create e-books that can be shared immediately via hand-held digital devices such as SmartPhones, tablets, and e-readers.  We also introduced resources such as Ulukau; the Hawaiian Electronic Library, which makes these resources available for the use, teaching, and revitalization of the Hawaiian language and for a broader and deeper understanding of Hawaiʻi, and Kaiwakiloumoku; a virtual archive – a multi-media haven for online cultural resources for learning like videos, snapshots, articles, recipes, interviews, profiles of Hawaiian elders, and more.
