Aloha e na haumana,
Here is our week in review:
On Monday and Tuesday we spent more time getting to know each other. You shared with your classmates the personal logos you each created. Very creative!!!! You each also had an opportunity to ask me questions, so that you got to know me a little. I handed out your syllabi and we discussed it.
Homework for all periods was to get your syllabus signed. For Periods 6 and 7, you were asked to define the words chemical and chemistry.
On Wednesday and Thursday, everyone went to the learning center to check out textbooks. Remember class, your textbook is your responsiblity. I will not allow anyone to leave their books in my class. Any books left in my class, will be returned to the library, and you will have to check them out again. We then had a discussion on class rules, and you helped me to write some for our classroom in Keoua 2018. Finally, we read pages iv-v in the textbook about lab safety.
Homework for these nights was to read over lab safety rules again, and prepare for short quiz next class.
On Friday, we took the quiz, then moved into our first group activity. Each class was divided into “expert” groups, and asked to read page 4-6 in the textbook. These pages introduced you all to the format of Chem Com. In Chem Com., the concepts of chemistry will be presented as you use them to solve a real-world problem. In Unit 1A the residents of the fictional town of Riverwood woke up to the nightmare of a contaminated water supply. You will learn about solution chemistry as we attempt to get down to the cause of the problem.
In the group activity, you were asked to isolate fact from fiction within these expert groups. You were then reassigned into “home” groups, where you disccused the finding of your expert groups. We will use this format of group discussion over an d over again in this class. You were then asked a few questions about “pure” water and water usage. We will debrief this activity next class.
Homework- Start collecting data on how your family uses water, using the worksheet I handed out in class. Also get your notebooks ready for our first lab next week. Your first entry in your notebooks will be the water use activity.
Have a great weekend.
