2012 Bigger and Better…

Our first meeting of Greenies Unite! took place on January 23rd after school. Visit our What’s Up? page to see what the organization looks like so far and what events we have scheduled so far. We welcomed back friendly faces from last year and a few “newbees”.                                            A few hot topic items that need immediate attention:

1) “Letʻs have a better name then Greenies!”

2) Committees and leaders (please SIGN UP HERE! (Hint: click on it))

3) Service Learning Project on campus (Olana Chowʻs anti-styrofoam campaign)

4) Monthly Movies (King Corn and Food Inc.)

and our next meetings as a hui will be:                                                                      Monday February 6th, and Friday March 9th at 2:40-3:20pm.                                  BE PROMPT so we can start right away!

    Hi guys,

I just want to elaborate on something for #1 involving our group name.

I can up with a possible name for the group, “Green Pinky.” It stems from the saying “green thumb” and the idea is that we make a “pinky promise” to better the environment and evolve a more sustainable future. I suppose the acronym would be GP and it could also stand for “Great Potential” which is much like the pinky-finger because it’s small, but it has potential. It is much like our group too because we have just gotten it rolling and our group has much potential for being a important part of our school and community. I might start a sketch for that (maybe a green ribbon tied around the pinky from the sayings like tie a string around your finger, to remind you of something, was tied and used as a bow. Or a “forget me not knot,” which has served as a reminder to leave the past behind.) I hope there are many other ideas that you guys came up with and it’d be great to get some suggestions for improvement for this one too!

hehe, I like the name of course. It has a ton of meanings to it. And also…maybe on the presentation day, everyone that comes could have their pinkies tied with a green ribbon? Or like some type of green (environmentally friendly) string? Idk, just making ideas. xD

hey so i have a question:
is it possible to have two leaders for the group? It will make it easier on myself if we could split up the tasks.

Yes! We can have more than one, just they need to play nice with each other. You know the saying all chiefs and no Indians makes a terrible tribe…or something like that. :)

Honestly, I love our group name: “Greenies!” GP isn’t a bad runner-up. But since we’re reconsidering the group’s name, here’s a few options that I thought of:

1.) SWAGG: Sustainable Wellness and Green Growth
2.) SEEDS: Students Educational Endeavor to Develop Solutions
3.) SEEDLINGS: Students Educational Endeavor to Devise Lessons In a New Green Society
4.) PLANT: Preserving Land and Natural Treasures
5.) TREE: Teens Reconnecting to Earth’s Exposure
6.) GREEN: Grass Roots Environmental Efficacy Network
7.) SEMA: Student Environmental Management Authority
    8.) SAP: Sustainable Agrarian Plan
9.) EARTH: Environmental Awareness – Rediscovering Tradition and Heritage
    10.) SEA: Sustainable Environmental Agency

I kind of like where this is going, but one setback is that people may not remember what those acronyms stand for because they are a little complicated. Maybe we can tweak it a little and maybe have a bit of a story sort of thing so people remember what are our goals just by the name. We probably want a name people can easily remember, easily associate it with our group and feel personally connected to help in the endeavors.
