100 Club Members

Congratulations to the keiki in the pic below for making it into our 100 Club! These keiki mastered their multiplication facts and proved it by scoring 100% on a timed test. Their hard work and dedication to studying really paid off. On Monday these students will celebrate this great accomplishment by partaking in a pizza party at lunch.

One of the expectations of 4th Grade is that the haumāna enter the new school year with mastery of their basic multiplication facts. It is very important that ALL haumāna continue to study these consistently throughout the summer months. When school starts, the students who invested time to study during their vacation will truly be thankful.100 Club

Way to go, Alex!

Congratulations to Alex for winning the Yogurtland gift card! He was the lucky student to win the prize for January. Students that earn at least seven medals in IXL.com for the month are placed in a drawing for the gift card. Many of our 3B students were in the drawing because of their hard work in IXL. Remember, you can go on any time to practice the skills you need to work on. It doesn’t have to just be the time it is assigned for homework. Tomorrow is the last day for February, so checkout how many medals you have so far. If you’re close to having seven, don’t give up. Practice until you get it!

As a class, we came in second place for the 2nd Trimester for the greatest amount of medals earned (for grades 3-5). Ho’omaika’i! Continue to strive for excellence!alex

MAP Mid-Year Testing

Students in Papa ʻEkolu are scheduled to take their 2nd MAP test this year on Wednesday and Thursday (January 9th and 10th). Our keiki will be tested in the areas of reading and math only. Please see that your child gets to bed at a reasonable time and eats a hearty breakfast. Encourage your keiki to try their best and keep a positive attitude.

Kahiau- The True Meaning of Christmas

Yesterday forty Papa ‘Ekolu students, ten parents and two teachers scurried off to Target and Safeway on a mission- to buy gifts for others. Both classes worked hard for weeks to earn money to help a family in need. After collecting over $900, our keiki went shopping for the basic needs of a family of six as well as a few gifts for the family’s four keiki for Christmas. The task was to buy all items on the shopping list and stay within a given budget. All groups accomplished what they set out to do as they also had the opportunity to problem solve and use their math skills learned in school.

Today was a joyous but emotional day as the keiki and teachers presented the gifts they purchased to the mother of the family (Aunty Jazz), one of her keiki and a representative from the Big Island Giving Tree Organization. It was very touching to see how our gifts brought tears of joy to Aunty Jazz and others that watched on.

In addition to adopting this family, Papa ‘Ekolu’s generosity also allowed them to buy gifts for two other young children from another family. These children will surely be happy to receive toys and books on Christmas day.

Great work e na haumana! May blessing come upon you this Christmas season as you are truly wonderful people inside and out!

Note: Check back soon for a video of our huaka’i. Currently problems are being encountered with our video production.

Our Adopted Family

Papa ‘Ekolu has “adopted” a family for our service learning project. It is a family of six living on the Hamakua Coast. The father of the family has recently been laid off from work and the mother is unable to work due to illness. The four children range in ages from 20 months old to 9 years old. The family has one girl and three boys.

The family is in need of basic necessities such as diapers, baby wipes, bath soap, toothbrushes, etc. It is sad because they are having such a hard time and sometimes can’t afford gas for their car. When this happens, the children are unable to get to school. We hope that with the money our students donate, we can help make Christmas a little brighter for them.

Keep on earning your money, boys and girls! It’s for a good cause.

IXL Incentive Program

Mrs. Hara paid a visit to Kina’u Pod this morning to talk about Kula Ha’aha’a's incentive program for this school year. Flyers were sent home today giving haumana and ‘ohana the details of this exciting program that encourages the use of IXL.com to strengthen students’ math skills. 3B is off to a great start with many students already earning a prize from the treasure box for mastering seven (7) skills this month already!

Keep on working hard on IXL.com, students! Maybe we will win the trimester prize and have ourselves a pizza party! Yum, yum!

Market Day Fun

Today’s Market Day was a huge success! The keiki worked hard to prepare their products to sell and had an awesome time running their business for their teacher’s and classmates. From hacky sacks, to cupcakes, to flower pens…there was an array of items for sale. Take a look at the slideshow made by Kumu Iaea-Honda to see all the homemade items that were made by our very own keiki and ‘ohana.

A special shout out to our parents for their kokua today, especially our 3B parents Marissa and Eric!

Math Test on Monday 5/7/12

We completed our unit on fractions, so now it’s time to see how much you’ve really learned. Your chapter test will be on Monday. You may review your completed worksheets, including the chapter review that we worked on today. In addition, you may want to do some extra practice in the fraction section of IXL.com. Here are the skills that you will need to know how to do:
1. Find equivalent fractions
2. Name fractions for a group of items, parts of an item, or parts of a set
3. Compare fractions and order them from least to greatest or greatest to least.
4. Label fractions on a number line.
5. Reduce fractions to simplest form.
6. Solve word problems involving fractions.
7. Add fractions with like denominators.

Study hard!

Hilo Farmers’ Market

Papa ‘Ekolu went on a huaka’i today to observe different goods and services being sold at our Hilo Farmers’ Market. In addition, the students practiced being smart consumers as they purchased items for a tasting party/pilina building activity that was held back at school in the afternoon. The haumana learned that you can make your money stretch a long way if you think and make smart decisions based on costs and benefits.

Mahalo parents for joining us on this fun and educational trip to downtown Hilo!
