Congratulations to our 3B presenters that moved on to the semi-finals of our 2013 Speech Festival! Five groups recited their fables to the entire Papa ‘Ekolu class as our fabulous judges used the criteria to rate the students. In the end it came down to these two groups moving on to the finals on Wednesday:

Kameron and Emma Rose (3B) reciting “The Shepard Boy and The Wolf”

Kacelyn, Emma and Karissa (3A) reciting “The Donkey and The Lap Dog”

The other semi-finalists from 3B included: Emily & Hayden, Denby & Lea, Shania & Dylan, and Isabel & Brooklyn

If you have time, come to the Finals on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 from 8:00-9:30 A.M. @ Lunalio Hale.

MAP Mid-Year Testing

Students in Papa ʻEkolu are scheduled to take their 2nd MAP test this year on Wednesday and Thursday (January 9th and 10th). Our keiki will be tested in the areas of reading and math only. Please see that your child gets to bed at a reasonable time and eats a hearty breakfast. Encourage your keiki to try their best and keep a positive attitude.

Rotary Club Donates Dictionaries

Yesterday members of our local Rotary Club visited Papa ‘Ekolu and gave out a dictionary to every student and teacher in 3rd Grade. Our haumana learned that this Rotary Club is a service club that focuses on helping people in our community. By giving out dictionaries, the club hopes to promote and encourage the importance of reading!

Tonight’s homework assignment is a task from the Rotary Club. The students are asked to think about the questions in “The Four-Way Test”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

On the worksheet that is being sent home, students need to think of examples of things which illustrate each of the items listed above. They are to write a sentence explaining their drawing and color all of their drawings.

Please do quality work, keiki! If we all fulfill our kuleana, our class will get a Kindle from the Rotary Club. You can do it!

Writers Celebrate

After weeks of finding a “seed” from real life experiences, developing characters, and forming a plot, 3B haumana shared their published realistic fiction stories with each other. It was a wonderful time to listen to stories that came straight from events in our own lives. We were also blessed with warm sunshine to just layout in the cool breeze and listen to our friends’ stories. What a splendid way to celebrate our accomplishments and to build pilina in our classroom!

Dictionaries for Everyone!

The Rotary Club of Hilo visited us today and presented a dictionary to every 3rd Grade student, teacher, and EA! The Rotary Club works hard to fund-raise monies to help out the community with projects such as supporting literacy in our public and private schools. Every third grader across the state gets a dictionary from the Rotary Club. What a fantastic and generous thing to do! We also learned that our very own Headmaster, Dr. Fortuna, is a member of the Rotary Club. How awesome is that!

Mahalo, Hilo Rotary Club, for your support and generous gift!

Can you pronounce this word?
HIPPOPOTOMONSTRASESQUIPPEDALIOPHOBIA

Some of the keiki in 3B actually could! Check your dictionary to see what it means.

Keiki Rock at Speech Festival

There was a feeling of excitement earlier this week as students anxiously waited their turn to recite their fables to their classmates and teachers. Everyone did an outstanding job in memorizing and presenting their speeches with animation and enthusiasm. Boy, we sure do have some natural performers amongst us!

Congratulations to 3B’s five groups that made it to the semi-finals that were held on Tuesday: Sophia/Dayanee, Suliasi/Tayzialynn, Candace/Ewalea, Christian/Logan/Karl, Kylan/Dilllon.

A special shout out to Candace and Ewalea for advancing to the finals that was held in Lunalio Hale on Wednesday! They represented us well in their recitation of “The Stubborn Cucumber”. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to them and the other students share their pieces. Mahalo e na keiki! Job well done!!

Speech Festival 2012

It’s that time again for memorizing a piece of writing and reciting it to our classmates and teachers. Both 3A and 3B will participate in the Speech Festival this year by selecting a fable to memorize and sharing it with others. Students may choose to perform alone or with a partner. Scoring will be based on four components: Preparation, Delivery, Body action and Poise. A rubric was sent home today and is also posted here for you, if you need it. This will be used for scoring, as well as for a significant portion of the students’ 2nd Trimester speaking grade.

Here’s the timeline for the speech festival:
* January 11th-29th: Select and practice memorizing/performing a fable
* January 30th: Class Presentations
* January 31st: Semi-Finals: 3A and 3B
* February 1st: Finals; Lunalilo Hale @ 8:30 a.m.

Students should find time to practice their fable at home every day. Minimal time will be given to practice in class, however, students will be given time to rehearse with partners, if necessary.

Blog Comment Homework- 11/30/11

“Aloha Aku, Aloha Mai” If you give love, you will receive love.

This is Kula Ha’aha’a's 2nd Trimester Hawaiian Value that we are emphasizing in class and around school. We even hope that the behaviors that demonstrate Aloha Aku, Aloha Mai are extended at home and in the community as well.

Students and parents, what does Aloha Aku, Aloha Mai mean to you? What would you observe if you saw someone showing aloha? How does it make you feel to give and receive aloha? How does aloha affect the world that we live in? Think carefully before you respond so you can organize your thoughts. Please edit your work so that your mana’o is clearly stated. Your voice and thoughts count and we really want to hear what you have to say on this topic.
